Also, I think most CO kids that run Arcadia run the 3200, shooting for the magical 9:00 barrier. Plenty of them improve by 20 seconds over the distance at sea level, though the conversion allows for more like two seconds per lap. Of course, most of those kids are in rarified air, pun intended, to begin with and don't have much competition in CO.

Finnerty broke Bjorklund's Minnesota record in a race in Indiana.

Bolt's second best time in 1973 was 4:08.1.
Florida Relays record has the "boys 1600m" record as 4:05.04, by Steve Bolt. Since we're converting 1600 times, that should be the record.
If that's a converted time from a full mile (didn't even know they ran the 1600 back then), it must have been faster than 4:07.4...
That's interesting. When I was running in high school, I had always heard that Bolt's state record was 4:06 which would make sense that he ran that at the FL relays and then the meet converted it to 4:05 when they started running the 1600m. With that being said, every article on Bolt that I can find lists his high school PR as 4:07. If that's accurate, then McGregor must have the state record.
One of the problems in Alabama is that our high school athletic association only keeps track of state meet records which is obviously a joke. Considering state meet records the actual state record is the equivalent of considering the Olympic games/world champs meet record the world record. Very backwards and illogical.
It makes perfect sense that they only keep the state meet records because that's the only meet that the state operates. And they're not calling it the state record, only the state meet record. Any changing of that phrase is not their fault.

Not really. Records in other sports include the regular season. (TDs in football, points scored in basketball, HRs in baseball) The state also refers to them as the "state record" and a lot of people in our state have the misconception that a "state record" can only be set at the state meet. If the state high school athletic association can keep up with the mountain of stats for every other sport, it shouldn't be too tough for them to also keep track of the overall state records in track and field.
For the MI mile record: how fast did ritz run?
Again, all misconceptions are on you.

I think the record wall at the Rockford track says 4:09.xx (maybe 4:08.xx). I'm also pretty confident that it was for 1600 too.
I think he could have gone faster, but he chose to run the 5000m at Pre that year and narrowly missed Lindgren's HS record (later broken by Rupp).

Pretty remarkable how many of the top few on that list are Olympians, and how there is a pretty notable drop-off after Pyrah. Also, of those recordholders faster than 4:04, plenty have a chance to make an Olympic team, as they are not in their prime yet.
I may have missed some Olympians somewhere on that list (and recordholders not on the list), but it was interesting how clearly those elite high school milers have such a great shot at becoming Olympic level athletes.

This is true, but a far larger list would be Olympians behind the record holders so they are not listed. Kennedy & Croghan are two off the top of my head from Ohio. These lists have to be vast for the distance rich states.

If you expanded the list to include runners who have represented USA at World Cross and the World Championships for track and field there would be a few more bold names on that list. Nine of those marks were set in 2011 or 2012, too! Those runners won't be challenging for Olympic berths until 2016 at the earliest.
Steve Scott might be the most notable exception. I think he ran around 4:15 in high school in CA?

Thanks! My memory failed me (or maybe they hadn't updated the board when I was in the stadium in 2002). One of my favorite Ritz memories from his senior year is when he won the 4x800m at one of the indoor MITCA meets; yes he won by himself (they didn't have a 3200m at the meet, and he wanted to run the 3200m).
So many fast times from Michigan in the early 00's too! I forgot about Kenneth Ferguson; dude was a stud. The day he ran that 35.9 it was so windy in the stadium too!

Thompson did run that time but it was 1997 (Scholastic Outdoor) not 1979.

Who the heck is Sam Vazquez, the guy listed under FL?

I believe he ran for Arkansas, then NAIA school Embry Riddle. This past summer, he hit the Olympic B standard; since he was representing Puerto Rico - the only one to meet the standard - he was selected to run in London.
Props to him for sticking with it - I only know a little bit about his story (and ran against him once in an NAIA race) but it seems he has found some success after plenty of ups and downs.
Ritz ran 13:44.7 at US Nationals and not Pre.

The Rockford High School website lists the 4:05.9 as being for 1600 meters, as does Ritz's own website.https://sites.google.com/site/rockfordtrackandfield/boys-recordshttp://dathanritzenhein.competitor.com/achievements/
