I don't think I ever ran "to be seen." There's personal satisfaction and better physical and emotional feeling that comes with running. That's all I sought and all I ever expected. I even had a two-year relationship with a woman who never saw me run.

A huge problem with runners is a tendency towards asociality/asexuality. Consider cutting back your mileage a bit and taking up partner (ballroom) dance once or twice a week. Great cross training, but most importantly it will engage you with women on a deeper level, and the benefits will last your lifetime:

Maybe it's because I did my best running in my 30s and was part of a large "coed" running team in a progressive city, but I never saw runners as having problems with asexuuality. Maybe the young ones living in their parents
basements, but young adults, or even collegians? No.
You'll get this sort of thing from time to time if you're serious. My parents never quite understood why I put so much energy and time into something that to them seemed to have so little pay off. They were great parents but this was just one of those things.
I'd probably have told your uncle that it's my time and I get to waste it anyway I want as long as it doesn't hurt anyone and that I have no intention of quitting so if time wasting bothers him so much he might want to stop talking to me about running because he's wasting both of our time.
You aren't going to change his mind unless you do something like make a national team or get a shoe contract. Don't try. He's entitled to his opinion but he's not entitled to bother you with it. If he keeps on just tell him you aren't going to discuss this because there's no point to it.
I generally try not to be seen when running. there goes that theory.
People that are bothered by other people's running are usually either a) out of shape coach potatoes trying to bring you down to their level so they won't feel so guilty about themselves for not exercising or b) don't have a life of their own or no passionate hobbies so they don't get "it".

The statement that nobody gives a crap is probably spot on.
Of course when I had a staff years ago, if they wanted something special they would first ask if I had run that day. If I had they would ask, if I had not they would come back later to ask! So I guess they cared ;)

If you want someone to give a sh*t that you run, join the Army. People will think you're hot sh*t if you can run pretty quick. They'll even b*tch you out if you aren't fast enough. You'll have to get pretty good at marching too though.
You guys are all missing the point. You're analyzing the uncle's words out of context. Some runners need to hear that. As much as we like to look in the mirror and say that we run for local glory because it's fun and challenging...we're usually compensating for something else.
I only know one guy who is really fast around here (can win any local road race he enters) who actually has his head on straight. The rest of them allow running to control them. The're either running FROM something or use running as a measure of self-worth/gaining respect from others.
