Perfect conditions with almost no wind.
Vail is one of the most consistent runners I've ever seen, cross the board. Never seems to have a bad day. Reminds me of Max King in this respect.

Your point? Shorter was a gold medalist and our best marathoner. Vail finsihed 11th at the trials and Trafeh was dnf, so why are you comparing them with Shorter.
They have cut off time at an every check point. If you do not pass each point by certain time, you get cut off. That's why there are many people who do not finish, even if they do not bonk.
why do they cut people off like that? This seems like an insanely competitive marathon. Is there some sort of backstory here?

Hate to say it but part of the reason for Vail's consistency and his much better pacing than most comes from his days at OK State. Even pacing is how Dave Smith (I know, tons of folks on here think Dave Smith is a horrible coach) constantly demands that his runners race. Might as well give a bit of credit where it is due.

Because the emphasis is on excellence. If you're not prepared to get the job done, don't show up.
I agree that Dave deserves a lot of credit, especially since he still coaches Vail.
