ene,
If you have any contact at ethiopiarun.org, can you please ask for a biography of the athletes and perhaps even better a journal of team activities. I think there would be a lot of interest.

They run six miles of just drills every day in addition to their 100+mi/wk of running, as well as 500 pushups and 2000 situps daily.
Where did you get that information?
Don't count out the Kenyans yet. Kipchoge beat him last year and looks better this year. Chebii had a killer kick last year, but have not seen anything from him this year. Bekele I think is doing the double because his government wants him too. So, his heart might not be into it after he should win the gold in the 10K. He is modest, which is refreshing, so you can't tell if he is just down playing the 5k.
Anyways, should be a great race. Hopefully NBC will show it without commeercials. But, thats unlikely with no americans in the final.
While i can't validate the exact numbers I can tell you that i have observed these guys training in Addis and they do huge quantities of drills as part of their workouts.
And its not just the elite. The same approach can be seen in provincial towns and also in eritrea which was influenced by the ethiopian approach.
Haile has recently built a gym and does some sessions but i don't know to what extent weights are part of the program. Anyone else know more about this ?
Interestingly some of the kenyans also do a lot of drills but it is a lot less structured than the ethiopian approach, i think this is why ethiopia is getting more consistent results.
At Irv's clinic, he discussed the information that he had received from Portugese, Moroccan and Ethiopian coaches. The Moroccans do similar volumes of drills and core strengthening work.
Irv said that at a Moroccan junior training camp in Florida, their "on paper" mileage was in the fifties, but the was excluding the 60k of drills they did every week.
The age argument (older vs younger) is always surprsing to me. It is science to say that older runners don't respond well as compared with younger runners. But it seems like some people think otherwise. If Haile was that old as some runners would like us to believe, how in the world then he could run 26:37 and beat the younger guy N Kemboi? It is like saying Edwin Moses could come back and beat the fastest hurdler in the world.
And as to the drugs allegations, just give it a rest!
What are you talking about? Haile G. is nowhere near as old as Edwin Moses. The comparison is absurd. Haile has just barely started the downslope of his career, a downslope which would be even less apparent were it not for Kenny Bekele.
First of all, there is not f***ing way he is 22 or clean. At least Geb looked in pain when he set his wr's, Bekele looks expressionless. It is not EASY to set wr's, yet Bekele does it while looking like the biggest doper ever, not because he set them so close, but because there is no sign of strain on his face, and I'm sorry, but if you break the 10k wr, it has got to hurt. Also I'd say he is 25-27, no way in hell is he 22.

Sure, that's what we need -- a grimace test. Grimace severity must be proportional to performance quality. Otherwise, it's an automatic 2-year ban, with no possiblity of appeal.
I like it.
Of course, this would likely result in a disproportionate number Japanese and Korean runners being banned, but something must be done to show these expressionless bastards we mean business.
And you're absolutely right about the age thing. We've got to crack down on these fibbers. I demand to see Merlene Ottey's birth certificate.

He's no doubt older than what is claimed, but that's par for the course. Sure, he's also doped. But that's par for the course too - since certain folks are protected these days.
