WHO CARES. Medals are the first thing I throw out after a race. They are so trivial. Get your Zen on. The real reward is the experience, not some made in China piece of cheap tin & ribbon. The 2012 medals are meaningless paper weights. Get rid of them anyway possible with the least waste of energy.
Tired of the trophies, memorials, monuments, overpass plaques, moments of silence, 7th inning god bless americas and crotch salutes.
but I do appreciate a ROAD SIDE CROSS.

Back in the 1970s NYM gave out a pewter 1 1/2 inch dia. competitors keepsake disc(and a rose for each woman) at the finishline and another larger medallion for the first 100 finishers. That 2 1/2 inch elite medallion consisted of the competitors disc set on a larger disc and had a gold(colored)coating. The smaller keepsake came with a chestpin ribbon and the First 100 medallions had a loop over your head orange and white ribbon.
Do they continue that practice today or does the 2:10 guy get the same keepsake as the 5 hour folks?
Those cheap bast ards don't give out anything like that now. Boycott the New York Road Runner races!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you feel Wittenberg is overpaid at a 500G base please comment on Max Siegals $500,000 base and the included perk of having permission to hire his company to do contract work for the USATF.
Max's deal is a bunch of crap too. But Wittenberg needs to go for the club to survive. I for one will not renew if she is in charge.

As stated by someone above, keeping this one in a trophy case with all of your legit finisher medals would be questionable, but if you want it as kind of a interesting conversation piece from the race that was cancelled, I'm okay with that.

This will appeal to the masses. This is all they were running for anyway.
It reminds me when I was running my first marathon. It was an out and back course and I remember this one lady in particular. On the way out she jumped into the road and was shouting something like "this is what you are running for..." and pointing to her jacket. On the way back, she was in the middle of the road again shouting the same thing. This time waving her "Boston Marathon" jacket like a matador. I assume she thought I was running the race so I could qualify for Boston and get a cool jacket like hers. I finished 3rd in 2:31. So, yeah, that jacket was quite the motivation.
I can't wait to get mine. I ran like many others a full marathon that day in Central park in 4 hours and 23 minutes. It was a glorious experience and I will wear my medal to work the day after I get it in the mail to show to my co workers of my special day. I wonder do you think they would also give me a finishers certificate to frame on my wall?
I ran the NYCM about 8 years ago and I received a shirt in the mail after the marathon for finishing in the top 100.

I have to say that this is an awesome niche charity that should be a bit more profiled in runner communities.
Obviously the medals they receive are more for moral support for the end recipients than a need filled, but that is a much better end use of medals than collecting dust in some closet that never sees a soul.
Kudos to them, and I will certainly keep them in mind when I sign up for future races that reward finishers medals.
I don't understand why people hate on finisher medals. Like it or not, it takes work to run a marathon. Some people are thrilled to walk 26 miles, others are thrilled to jog it, some are thrilled to break 4 hours, BQ, 3 hours, 2:30, OTC, whatever it is. You think Patrick Makau thinks you're a stud for running 2:29 while some housewife and mother of 3 is pathetic for finishing in 6:30?
Your medal is what you make it. I've kept all my marathon medals, except one that I lost. Medals for shorter distances I throw away. And I keep the bibs from marathons and races I win. I don't have a trophy case, they're just in a shoe box in a closet. Or rather, they were. Now my 4-year-old son is old enough to think they're cool (but not old enough to think they're lame) so I recently put them out on a shelf in the living room. Sometimes he'll run around the block and then over to the shelf and put a medal on. If he felt he ran fast he'll pick one that looks like gold. Sometimes I tell him the story of the race the medal is from.
So I'm glad I kept them, even if I didn't particularly care about them when I received them.
Interesting story. I also have kept them in a shoebox and only open the box to put another medal inside. I may never open it but possibly I'm saving it for a day, like yourself, where I'm happy I didn't throw the medals out.

OOOHH wear it to work so all the co-workers can see that I ran/walked a 4:31 marathon. 4:31 please..Oprah ran faster. I think Valeri Bertinelli ran about the same time?
I love the sport but I hate what it has turned into. Big deal you ran 4 laps around Central Park. If that is the criteria then you can run ANY 26.2 mile circuit and say you ran a marathon.
Go to work and show off that crappy piece of metal they buy in bulk and toss out like confetti. The NYRR has a great money churn going on. You want a medal? You should be smashing down the doors of the club demanding your refund.
The nerve of NYRR and NYC Mayor Bloomberg pulling the old switcheroo at the last minute leaving tens of thousands in a lurch. And LR is complicit as they pander to the affair by running numerous glorious headlines about the great UNOFFICIAL RACE. Everyone in NYC is snickering at the naive hayseed fools..
