No coach certificates but you have to admit that "Terrance" sounds rather British for a first name.

im at loughborough uni and i've heard nothing about this. currently our coach, george gandy is away in kenya, but before he went he said nothing about retiring or even stepping down from his position as national event coach for endurance. seems very odd and i suspect this is a troll attempt.

Why would Gandy have to retire or step down? The contracts are up. Maybe UKA want a more professional set up and a coach who can get some results!

This rumour has been circulating for a while (even amongst current uka staff) and I for one very much hope it is true!

Apparently Deena Kastor and her husband are taking over at Mammoth but I don't know if they'll coach the mid-distance runners.

I would have thought he is taking Stewarts place? The focus on these type of things is always on a high up manager rather than the people who are doing ie runners and coaches. There are 2,000 + UKA coaches and 95%+ of these are unpaid and working a regular job ie amatuer. While that continues the performaces of the long distance runner will continue to be at an amateur level

. Wether or not the coaching is better the main difference is that both coach and athlete have financial support to do it on a pro level. The downside is with the number of races run at college level and emphasis on quick results what will these runners do much once they leave the college system

The focus in the UK should be on supporting top coaches like Gandy (he has mainly been funded through the Uni not UKA over the yrs), I know of another top coach who has had numerous international athletes. He works full time in a brewery just think what he could do if he was full time. But no they will get someone in on £100k + to tell him where he is going wrong

Gandy is about as far away from a professional coach as you could possibly get! A lovely lovely man and a great guy to share a beer with but if you want a professional set up then you need Gandy as far away from it as possible.

I would have thought that the ideal scenario for Gandy is to relax a little, coach the students in Loughborough and his small personal group with a little more focus and enjoy semi retirement.

re george gandy not being professional;

loughborough is a fantastic set up for both academics and running. if u want to be professional in the true sense of the word then you shouldnt be going to uni!

george is undoubtedly the most knowledgeable coach in the uk, and i would day the best, although this is of course just a personal opinion. however, taking your statement of professionalism into account we can split this up into three three distinct groups;

1. training

2. support

3. lifestyle

1. training; george's "running" training is an exceptional tried and tested method of progression. he doesnt kill you in the winter, focusing on one 3k-10k specific session on the tuesday, the rest of the week being an emphasis on aerobic development. it has been proven over and over again that if one consistently follows the gandy programme then success is inevitable. examples include jack buckner, jon brown, chris warbuton, lisa dobriskey etc. in terms of the training outside of running george is an absolute guru when it comes to strength and conditioning, running a weights session on monday, a circuits session on wednesday, along with drills session (aka "speed prep") on a monday, wednesday and thursday. basically all basis' are covered, so in terms of training the gandy lboro programme is an all encompassing, successful method of coaching.

2. support; gandy offers advice to any athlete, and will talk to you for at least 90 minutes per meeting. i think a lot of athletes get the wrong impression of george, or have been told that "he only coaches the best". this is totally untrue. of course i can agree with people when they he is quite, but if YOU speak to him then he will help you with anything. carrying out his training programme to the "T" also helps. in terms of lboro sport support the place is second to none. ice baths, physio, massage, you name it it is there and open to anybody in the AU team. again many people are afraid to ask if they can use such facilities, but pretty much everyone can access them. Being a performace athlete (ie. have gone to a major champs or run fast) has its perks though.

3. lifestyle; completely up to the individual. in halls the food is very healthy, you can literally stuff yourself three times a day with excellent "running fuel" and not need to eat between meals. the only downside to halls is that you often miss the scheduled evening meal due to training, but what is stopping somebody making a risotto or something similarly easy and cheap to make? in terms of lboro's environment, it is very conducive to running, being situated a stones through away from the beacon hill country park, where most of the runners steady running is done.

gandy has ruined so many good athletes! look at the list of athletes he has coached in recent years and the subsequent injuries they have all dealt with. He is not the most knowledgeable coach in the UK and there are far better out there with as good a proven record with less athletes ruined in their wake. Sending out mass emails does not make you a good coach. These emails vary very little from year to year, explain, how that is coaching? never mind good.

Phil Townsend is arguably the best distance coach in the UK and receives 0 recognition for his acheievements/results!!!

firstly what do you define as ruin? if by injuries then this is a vice which all athletes go through, not just those who are coached by george. other top british coaches such as mick woods could be placed under the same label, and even phil townsend as wilko was injured in the summer? i'd love to know of these athletes that you say george has "ruined".

"sending out mass emails"; if you knew anything about loughborough you would know that gandy does not send the emails! as i've said before if YOU speak to george then he will speak to you till you cannot wait to leave the room! in my opinion there are too many athletes you beleive they have a right to be made the centre of a coaches' attention without even making an effort with them...thats just plain ignorance.

Maybe Amy Hastings knew all along. Although, seems Terrance black balled her with Hanson's or she would have gone to train with her friend Desi.

Terrance cleaned house so that Deena didn't have to. Amy was not a popular teammate. Scotty has had a rough year and is not in a good place (that will become obvious on Sunday). Angela does not like to train. All headaches for starting a new/fresh program. Fresh start without attitudes.

Hansons actually said NO to Amy joining their group....Terrence had nothing to do with it.
