just to expand on my previous point about runyan not knowing about the new selection rules, this is from the letsrun summary of the women's 1500:
"We asked Runyan after the race if she'd still consider going in the 1500 despite her struggles and she said, "I didn't know it was possible." Neither did any of the reporters interviewing her (except for us) but it certainly is the case.
We asked Rudolph if she was angry that she may have no shot for the Olympics even though she finished third and she said, "When I was first presented with the situation, I was angry. (But then I realized) if Marla gets in in the 1500, I'm the next one in the 5000. So hopefully I'll get to go either way."
so again, i applaud rojo and wejo for bringing this issue to the attention of the athletes. it's too bad that the window to decline a nomination is so brief. runyan might decide on thursday that she has no interest in the 1500, but by then it is too late. i hope that (perhaps because of rojo and wejo) she instead makes the decision before the nominations are sent in.
