At PI, I was given the option of a Bad Conduct Discharge or transfer to the Army. I took the BCD. I just couldn't get into wanting to hate so much. It wasn't a good fit. Glad I got out fast.

I started OCS 23 yrs ago, almost to the day. Only about 1/3 of our class didn't make it, so I'd be surprised if the washout rate has climbed to 80% now..

And we did multiple PFTs, not just 1 at the end of OCS. Kinda silly to criticize the USMC for not making better runners out of candidates & recruits when that's nowhere close to the objective of boot camp & OCS.

I ran low 17s, btw, & was usually 2nd in my platoon. Our drill instuctors could care less how fast you could run, as long as you weren't bringing up the rear. By far the more brutal physical conditioning concerned stuff like running through the woods as a squad, carrying heavy logs that were similar to telephone poles, but a little shorter..

PFTs were relatively easy, since we weren't packing any gear. Noweher near as tough as humping a full combat load 25 miles in 8 hours...wearing boots with steel shanks in the soles.. That sucked.

is that guy kidding? if this was the case, then the corps would only have a few thousand marines. bootcamp really wasn't tough at all, some things got on my nerves every once in a while, but nothing major. i think a lot of civilians picture every marine to look like john cena or something, but that is not the case. the corps does have plenty of muscle-head types, but i have met some extremely weak people, both in bootcamp and even more in the fleet. standards are dropping.

We started with 89 and graduated 40. I got PFC since I was roughed up from judo classes my Dad made us take at the Japanese Buddhist temple in the small farm town where we grew up picking truck farm (means year around work) crops on the west coast. 9 of our fellas were brought in midstream. One died in Motivation Platoon. One died in the mess hall while the DI yelled at him. The DI yanked his dead head back, laughed, and told us each of us to look at him since we will be killing in Vietnam shortly. Two guys died in our series after they jumped off 2nd/3rd floor. We had no stabbings in our platoon but the other three platoons had 4 stabbings (from issued bayonets).

DI's are being forced to look the other way when it comes to certain requirements. For the past decade the military has needed bodies. The bad eggs are known asap when they hit the fleet, but you better believe they are actually making the fleet.

Not counted as "failures" are forced transfers from MCRD to the US Navy or US Army. As civilians, Marine recruits voluntarily signed a contract with the Department of Defense and are still obligated for the duration and are on active duty in the military.

They don't count those given Medical Discharges as "failures" but as casualties of training exercises.

Also they don't count those given Bad Conduct Discharges and Dishonorable Discharges as "failures" but as those separated due to disciplinary and/or criminal reasons.

The only recruits counted as "failures" are those given General Discharges. It's for those who really tried their best, were not disciplinary problems, nor were criminal in behavior while in recruit training. But could not physcially nor mentally meet the requirements of the Marine Corps. While being separated were evaluated and deemed as unfit for other branches of the U.S. military.

These are 5k times I think. Interesting how the standards seem to get tougher.

Most raw, younger runners have a much easier time with sub 10:08 3k or sub 17:17 5k than with a 2:48 marathon or 1:18 half.

worknesh kidane can beat most if not all marines in a 3 mile run. and she is under 100 pounds, good luck to her in the chicago marathon on sunday.

Not doubting this, just doubting that anyone had a good handle on the record book. I did several 15:xx during OCS and then TBS, nobody seemed to be able to give a straight answer on the record. In addition, my Junior PLC course was at Camp Upshur which had hills and is now closed, and my Senior year was at Brown Field which is perfectly flat. TBS is also basically flat. I know I was never close to the record, but I did tie the Endurance Run record in 1988 (50 min) and they did not record it because one of the staff said ties don't matter. Hopefully someone has blown that record away by now.

To OP, I am sure there are plenty of 15 min guys passing through Paris I./San Diego, but lots more in OCS and TBS. I don't think anything going on in "boot camp" lends itself to running fast times, it is not that physically challenging, mostly head games. OCS is a little tougher and includes major sleep deprivation as 14:05 guy points out. TBS actually allowed me to do a bit of running on weekends and during some down time, that track was far away at the FBI academy so that never really happened, but lots of trails.

Hahahahaha, pretty funny stats. If you get sent home from MCRD there is something seriously wrong with you. On OCS, it depends, but most of the wash-outs seemed to be suffering from blisters and bad attitudes. I would say we lost 15-20% each summer of OCS, mostly injuries.

Try running 3 miles every morning for 80 days after getting punched, thrown, and choked out by 4 Marine Drill Instructors each who have personally tortured and beaten to death dozens of Islamo Fascists with their bare hands and who were in their pre-18 year old days were Golden Glove boxers, Tae Kwan Do experts, Judo experts, high school Wrestling Champs, Karate experts, etc. By the time the PT test is given at Stage I the average recruit has been baited and hazed into being a total mental zombie, physically shell shocked, and a mechanical robot unable to think any subject matters without verbal permission from his DIs.

This is outmoded and has no place in America. No wonder cops who were USMC soldiers are in the news nearly ever edition physically assaulting gang bangers, biker gangs, red necks, meth heads, in addition to paraplegics, homeless, and lung cancer patients. This has to stop.
