I think the question is whether being an IAAF or USATF race means that you can't allow people banned by WADA to compete. Chicago is an IAAF Gold Label race/Marathon major and the course is certified by the USATF so it must fall under their rules in some way.
I see that the IAAF rules require doping controls-
I don't know if these rules apply to everyone or just elites.
Anyway, if the IAAF or USATF require the ban, then Chicago didn't have a choice.
I am glad that Lance is barred from USATF certified marathons. There has already been too many questionable distance performances at the OG that the last thing distance running needs is Lance Armstrong showing up to marathons and getting a whole bunch of attention again. And this is just a stunt by Lance to bring attention to his cowardly crusade against USADA. He didn't have the guts to show up to arbitration and is now working on a collateral attack to his doping ban. The guy clearly was a doper. He was not just a doper to level the playing field, he used doping to be a better athlete than all the other dopers. He was the king of the dopers and should be taken down.
Precious Roy, I don't think that the procedures of that USADA kangaroo court, denounced as such in the court ruling against Lance's challenge to USADA's authority, were such as to allow him to use it. He did not even have discovery prior to the trial. If he cannot even find out the evidence against him, how is he going to get a fair trail from USADA? If the Feds knew THEY could not win their case against Lance, and dropped it, then we know that the evidence was not strong enough to convict him, and why should we call him cowardly in not pursuing an appeal to a body with utterly inadequate judicial procedures?

Why would the Chicago Marathon risk losing their status with USATF just to let in one controversial celebrity? Seems to me that they are just enforcing the rules, and there is not much to talk about here.

I get your point. But I believe - correct me if I'm wrong - that the rules REQUIRE them to ban Lance, once he accepted the USADA charges. It's not a preference or a judgment call.
So the real question is "Should the marathon make an exception for Lance"? Maybe they legally can't.

Just to be clear, Precious Roy, you probably already know this but I believe race courses are USATF certified but races are USATF sanctioned. Lance could race on a certified USATF course, but not in a USATF sanctioned race.

Chicago had no choice (well unless it wanted to loose its USATF/IAAF sanctions). The same thing would have happened if he tried to enter NYC, Boston, Berlin, London, etc.

Lance isn't barred from Chicago because he doped. Lance is barred because he is suspended from athletic competition in Olympic sports. It doesn't matter if 20,000 runners in the field had too many Red Bulls on race morning, they are not suspended.

This. USA triathlon also has rules in place than ban participation by someone even "under the investigation" of doping, which, is unfair. It says that you are guilty until proven innocent.
I still can't believe how many morons support him after knowing how much he was doping.

Good for you. But some of us care about sports. You clearly don't and that's fine.
I think the rule is that if you are a legitimate athlete - i.e. one of the international or national ranked athletes, you can not knowingly compete at an event where a banned athlete is competing, or you face sanctions.
So therefore, they would have to ban him, as they have a lot of 'real' athletes signed and ready to race.
Even though its just a fast fun run.
