UCLA receives more entering freshman applications each year than any other school in the world (Cal Berkeley is 2nd) thus it is extremely hard to get into UCLA on academics alone.

You want to look for DEVELOPMENT! Which coaches take kids who are average in high school, and then turn them great? Which in turn can take great kids out of high school, and make them the best. Texas A&M.

Michael Preble - 1:56 in the 800. 1:46 in college. NACAC Gold Medalist in the 8 and 4x4. Silver medal at NCAA indoors.

James Bonn - 1:53 in high school. 1:48 in college, with another year to go.

Show me another school that shows that much improvement. The only school I can think of with improvement curves like that is Columbia. But you won't get the rings there...

I think Arkansas might have been the only school, or maybe 1 of 2 schools, last year to produce 5 sub 1:49 800m runners. And of the runners listed on the roster, these are their 800m PRs.

The problem with Texas A&M is that they run fast but rarely at the right times. I guess that is better than nothing but certainly not some place that I would want to look - especially if you have ever been to that town.

You improve as you mature, going to a "good" college isn't going to maximize anything, go to a school for academics, the degree you receive will fund your runner habit for years and years afterwards and you can move to the town near the college with the best Mid-D program and train with the team post-collegiate.

Columbia turned Merber, a 4:12/1:53 high school guy, into a 3:35 1500 guy by the end of his career. They turned Everett, a 4:06.9/1:54 high school guy, into a 3:42 freshman. They DESTROYED Oregon/Oklahoma at the Penn Relays in the 4xmile this year. When they start getting some more serious talent like Everett..... it'll be hard for other teams to keep up.
