I'll be jumping into some fast tempo stuff soon....thanks for the reply...and I'll look up that book you referenced.
I'm saying, don't wait. Just jump in and if the mileage is low enough you won't get hurt/over-trained. I agree, that in a perfect world you'd be running high mileage to get strong and improve, but like you said, it's not fun and good for you really. Assess your strengths (speed) and work on that.
I attended a wedding last summer. A majority of the groom's guests were my college XC team who were running 2:30 marathons. We made a bet about who got bedrooms in the house we rented based on running a mile. I figured I would lose big time because I was out of shape and hadn't run a fast mile in years. I ended up running 4:49. I was a bit shocked. We all ran a 10 mile race a day after the wedding and I suffered through those miles (even going out in 6:10) and ended up running 64 minutes or something. So, it's all about speed. Some of my friends who i beat in the mile race ran 53 minutes in the 10 mile. They are marathoners. I am not. Assess the talents you have. I would do 1000 to 1200m repeats at 5k pace if i were you....whatever you do, try to keep shortening the rest interval. Run 3 x 1600m with 1 minute rest 10 days before your race. You'll know.
Good luck!
