Did I hear Flotrack say that Jamal Aarrass served a drug suspension? Anyone know the details behind that?
From a French newspaper article:
"Ahrass pleads guilty
The rider of the ES Nanterre Ahrass Jamel got a six-month suspension after testing positive for a derivative of nandrolone. Interview with a man who assumes.
Interview by Jean-Claude Derniaux | 26.10.2005
JAMEL AHRASS (24 years), bronze medalist over 800m at the Championships in France , 1'47'26 record, tested positive on July 21 at the meeting in Reims (Marne). The national laboratory for testing has established August 4 (September 21 and then at the second assessment against) the presence of a derivative of nandrolone (19-norandrosterone) in her urine. The disciplinary body of first instance of the fight against doping in the FFA gave a one-year suspension (six months suspended) as of September 28. How did you receive this sanction? Jamel Ahrass. I assume. But I know that I was fooled by a tainted product. After the Championships of France in Angers (July 14-16), where I have also been tested (negative), I bought a dietary supplement to Decathlon Montesson, near my home. It was shown in the box that I could gain muscle. When you're an elite athlete, is it not a mistake of buying such a product? I would not have trusted, for sure. I unprofessionally. But the disciplinary commission of the FFA who heard me understands that I did not intend to boost (note: Nandrolone is rather detected in sprinters). After this case, have you all alone? No, not at all. The club supports me a lot of Nanterre. Leaders know me well. But if I was in contact with other major clubs in Paris (Neuilly-Plaisance Sports, CA Montreuil, Racing), some have told me he did not want me after such a story. But the announcement of the penalty, I also received many expressions of sympathy. Mounir Yemmouni (French international on 1500 m) called me, and the tennis Moroccan Younes El Aynaoui. I was very touched. What will you do by the end of the suspension in late March 2006? I work nights as a security guard. A job that will allow me to go on a one month internship in Kenya with a friend and then to go to Morocco to train hard. Then I will prove my rage real value next summer."
A convicted, admitted and served drug cheat. Take him as a lower-profile Gatlin of sorts (obvisouly without the profile /previous accolades) for the mid-distance community. Now training stateside...
Torrences's PR is 3:34.25 from 2010.
But anyway...
What's that, 8 Americans with the A standard in the 1500 now?
Living Spree - Thanks, good info
Big pack w/ 100m to go.
3:41 win for Botezan.
Myers in 3:42
9. Wheating, Centro, Lagat, Lomong, Manzano, Brown, Andrews, Rupp, Torrence.
Half of the American A standard 1500 guys have the A standard in the 5000 as well:
Lagat, Rupp, Lomong and Torrence.
The others are:
Manzano, Wheating, Centrowitz, Andrews (800m focus)
Interesting that no one barely missed the A standard in this meet except for Brannen the Canadian.

Though it's still early in the season, I think I learned a couple things tonight.
2. Neither is Galen Rupp, if by there we mean gold medal contender. He needs to be capable of running 3:31 if he hopes to win Gold. Based on tonight, I would say he is not. And, even if he gets there, Farah will likely be able to run 3:30. Rupp may yet medal, but the metal won't be gold.
Um I thought it was universally known and accepted that Rupp's best chance for GOLD was in the 5000 or 10,000. Did I miss where the 1500 is even a consideration, especially after indoors...Granted he and Farah ran a great race, but they are more Distance runners 5k/10k

haha, good one.
Splits Andrews 53.5 last 400m
Rupp and Farah 54.7 last 400m
But only Torrence has the A in 800, 1500 and 5k.
So Rupp has the OLY A standard at 1500, 5000, and 10,000! Now that's some range.
Man I think 3:34 is pretty dang impressive for Rupp, and bodes well for his performances later on in the 5 and/or 10.

I think you're forgetting who he will most likely be running against. I'm not saying that Rupp sucks, or, that Rupp will definitely not win gold. I am saying that Rupp lost - again - to Mo and that Mo is probably not the favorite for gold either. I am also saying that his 1500 ability is indicative of that. There will be, probably, 5 guys in the 10000 who are capable of running 3:31 and, because they can, will also be capable of beating Rupp in the 10.
Is that really so hard to understand?

who exactly are these 5 guys? geb has a 3:31 PR, bekele has a 3:32 PR, and this was at their peak. and that is very, very fast for a 10k runner. so who are these 5 other guys who will be able to run 3:31?
Yes, forgot Russell Brown.
9 Americans (and counting) with the 1500m A standard.
Interesting that no one has even talked about America's top 1500m guy of those that ran the Oxy 1500's, Manzano.
3:36 flat to start his racing season.
I know he ran a mile in early April plus a 1600m leg at Penn but that was still base phase and he has been at altitude the last couple weeks.
I think it was a pretty good run and we should see him build from this.
3:34 for Rupp is remarkable. I never thought he had that kind of speed. Maybe he will be the next American to break 13:00 for the 5000.
