Nah, bra'...it's all a ploy! He's gonna crush it in the 1500 later tonight. He was just doing some pace work during the 800m

people need to chill out and stop scrutinizing every step the man runs. sure, he might be done, but who cares? i'm glad to see him still trying and i hope he can somehow escape the pressure that (yes, i agree) is still clearly in his head.
How do you know Vig is training him like an 800 meter runner? Because he ran a tune-up 800 meter race? Please enlighten us what type of training Mr. Webb is doing right now.
This is the predictable result of years of poor training. I could coach him back to 3:50, although it's unlikely that he could ever get back to his 2007 times.
Vig posts workouts on twitter that Webb and Andrews do.
He trains with Robby Andrews. Do you think Robby Andrews is training for a 5k and running 90 miles a week?
Last year Webb was running with Rupp. How do you think Rupp was training?
It's not even about the pressure now. Pressure messes with your head but 1:54 shows major physical problems and fundamental training issues.
Remember in HS when Webb tripled in a meet running a 4:06 1600 (last 800 is 1:52), a 49 400, and then ran 1:49 for the open 800.
Overtraining syndrome? Maybe Andrews is either running him into the ground in practice, or Webb is hanging on in practice but not recovering, or (obviously) he's simply not adapting to this type of training.
1:54 is not good for someone who has run like Webb has, but people should really back off. He's struggling. Seriously, when was the last time any of you guys had a bad day with 1:54?
"Webb's been put on a program emphasizing core strength "and he has cut out a lot of the junk food he was eating," says his coach, Alberto Salazar, who has also tinkered with Webb's form. "He used to have a lot of wasted motion going side to side with each stride. His arms were going out to the side, his feet were splayed out," notes Salazar, who believes Webb is "still not perfect, but his center of gravity is better.”" -RW
He should have listened to Salazar years ago
Well, he's been running "tune up" 800M races for seemingly months now. I just don't know what he is doing or even trying to do. And nobody on this board seems to know either.

Seriously, had I run a 1:54 in college I would have been devastated beyond belief. I was nowhere near Webb's caliber but a "bad day" back then was a 1:51 high or so, and it had better be in bad weather and training through. 1:54 is ridiculous. I think he's out there running sauced or something. I'm pretty sure a college all american could run an 800 in 1:54 after 8 shots of Petron...
He will be 30 next year. As a miler (with the exception of Lagat) its all down hill from there. Usually its all down hill after age 26-27. Obviously Lagat is a rare exception.
Last major championships or WR and age of top milers:
1986 Euro 800 29 Seb Coe
1986 Commonwealth 5000 30 Steve Ovett
1983 WR 1500 27 Steve Ovett
1986 Commonwealth Games 800 26 Steve Cram
1989 WR 3000 28 Said Aouita
2004 Olympic 1500 and 5000 29 Hichem El Gerrouj
If he ran 1:54, I doubt he'll even run the 1500m.
I ran my 1500 pr at 32. Webb should not be too old at this point. He needs a shrink more than a coach
he's on the line, 'bout to shred it up!

Does that give people the green light to mock him and his efforts?
I tend to agree with the above post that, what the heck is he trying to accomplish with running 1:54s against 2nd and 3rd tier college runners when most of his best years as a pro have been off of endurance? 5K, 10K, 3K early season then zeroing in on the mile/1500.
Webb is probably the most talked about, scrutinized, American runner of this generation and I've also cheered and been dismayed at performances over the years, and have been critical at times.
But to chide and make fun of him when he's down (and it's been a long time mostly) is poor form. That's my point.
Ive been saying he was done since 2009, when are goofs going to stop dreaming???
Kicked too early. Doesn't have the endurance. The eff, brah?
He only beat one guy in the heat :(
-maybe he really will give it up now
Webb needs to cut the crap and go to one of the developmental teams like Zap or Team Indiana Elite. Surely there is a coach that could at least get him in shape to compete with collegians.

A point well taken. Too many people are enjoying Webb's failure for whatever reason. I don't really understand it since runners are generally an unappreciated bunch and this guy has been a bright light in our sport. My point was to highlight how truly bad a 1:54 is, that's 11 seconds off of his personal best. Too many people are still in the "it's a rust buster" mindset.
There's a fine line between acknowledgement of what you're seeing and criticizing in this case I think. He looks fat and out of shape to me, and I don't think that's poor form to acknowledge. There are only a few potential reasons really. 1) He's not training seriously and is out of shape 2) He's currently got a substance abuse problem or is sick today 3) He used performance enhancing drugs throughout his entire career and is off of them now 4) He's got a mental or medical condition preventing him from running well.
gone are the days when he slips in a sub 13 second 100m in a 1500m race, I shall miss that.
well he is listed in the 1500m sheet, be curious to see if he runs and if so what time. would think anything in 3:40-3:45 would even be good given he ran the 800 earlier same day.
