Dangers of 3000+ Calorie Binges

If you're really that worried about it then why don't you just go to a nutritionist or a doctor?

I'm sort of the same way...no self control.

If a plate of something I really enjoy is in front of me I will literally eat 3000-4000 calories worth of it in a disgustingly short amount of time.

Friends know to move any chips/cookies far away from me if watching a movie.

So far today I've had 2 10oz cups of coffee with 2 oz of half and half, 12 oz water (I'll drink close to a gallon all day), 1 cup of red rice and beans with one egg over easy. I added a little ketchup and Sriracha for fun.

I'm still hungry so I'll finish a small bag of honey mustard pretzels from last night. That'll last until 11 I think so I'll have and package of maple and brown sugar oatmeal mixed with 1 or 2 tablespoons of creamy peanut butter.

A few hours later I'll repeat my breakfast and follow that with a handful of roasted almonds. I may add some raisins.

During the day I'll take some vitamins to fill in any cracks my diet has.

For dinner I'm not sure what I'll do. Probably just have a light post-run protein shake and water. Unless we decide to have sushi. Then I'll have a ginger salad, a sweet potato roll, and either a hamachi or spicy tuna roll. They usually give us small tempura bananas for desert so I'll eat one of those.

One day this week I'm sure I'll get some kind of bacon double cheeseburger and large fries at one of the fast food giants. I'll feel terrible after wards and wish I hadn't done it. Guilt over ruining all the good work I've done usually keeps me on the straight and narrow 5-6 days a week.

I hope you find a way to manage your binging.

Who cares about calories. You are eating processed food, too much dairy, and peanut butter that is made from corn syrup...

There is too much fake food. Once you learn the difference between real food and fake food, you can start posing questions about health.

That's honestly pretty near a normal dinner for me on a day where I have two long workouts (~1000 calories burned each). I don't think there's anything wrong with it unless you're not burning that many calories (and therefore are gaining weight).

The biggest problem I see is the obsession with food. When you tell me you had 1.5 tablespoons of peanutbutter as opposed to say, 1 or 2, sends a red flag that you probably have a more serious problem then those who just occasionally binge eat. I can down a bag of oreos, yes the big bag, with a 16oz of milk and still have room for more. I don't feel bad about it after because when I get up the next morning my weight is still normal for me. I have a self control problem like a lot of people but not a problem with food. It is also interesting the variety of foods you are eating to get this amount. I feel the body craves certain foods based on its nutritional needs. This may be what is happening. Certainly try counseling Patty. There are a lot of people who feel like they don't need it and do, but I am pretty sure if you feel like you need it you probably do.

i actually lost weight in college because i wouldn't go near that food. it was all shit, even the station where they make you eggs to order.... stupid ass cooks always used some form of vegetable oil and burn the shit out of my eggs, i ate at a sushi place from lunch and dinner, must have spend 100 a there, never ate breakfast, would just drink coffee and take adderall.

Well obviously the problem would be weight gain if you binge on a consistent basis. Also insulin resistance. Eventually if you continue to eat like this it will catch up with you and unwanted pounds will pile on. And down the road diabetes.

As someone who went through a very similar experience to yourself (maybe twice weekly binges of at least 3000cal over a couple of hours), it's a pretty tough habit to break out of. No amount of self loathing and disgust ever really seems be enough of a deterrent once those urges kick in again.

I can only go on my experiences of this, but I would say that absolutely counselling is a positive step, although don't expect quick changes. Thankfully it's a thing of the past for me, although I should add that it was the reason I stopped competing (and I was 'good' - 1.47 800m runner) and my eating is, for want of a better word, normal now. I'm mid-30's now and haven't competed for over 10 years now but I can honestly say it's only been the last 2 years or so that normality has been restored. In terms of the potential long term damage, my guts play up every single day now, regardless of how much or little I eat. I'll spare you the details but suffice to say it's pretty unpleasant and I would think is almost 99% likely to be as a direct result of the 'binge years'.

Is it just me or are a large percentage of runners neurotic?
