The difference is that Rupp won with that tactic, and he knew he could win. Derrick had no chance and ran dumb.

Derrick isnt hated yet because he is relatively new. Just wait for him to go pro and get hurt/have a bad result or 2 and the letsrun crew will hate him

Example: Chris Solinsky - wins 10k in AR, 12:56 and 12:55 in 5ks, everybody loves him. Drops out of race after getting pushed into infield(admittably lame), and decides not to run worlds due to injury - people accuse him of faking injury and dropping race because he knew he couldnt hang on anymore. which by the way that injury is pretty real

Although rupp and webbs have always been hated in some circles due to rupps altitude tent and pro coach since hs and webb's inconsistency and indecision

did he blow his load a lil early? maybe. but its not like he's a different dude from the one everybody praised early on.

I'm not saying Derrick ran poorly. I feel he ran quite well, and shouldn't be hard about himself with not winning, since he wasn't in a position to win, having waited till the last few minutes of the race. Also it's just an indoor race, so it wasn't really a good venue to put it all on the line. I'm looking forward to seeing his progression outdoors in the summer.

You might be a mod and not a good one, but the Brojos should be watching the column and could have it updated instantaneously. Certainly one of the mods could. We have to go through all of the "Rupp-certified" references, Ryan Grote's not funny polls with their "Gaylen" references, and on and on. I'm surprised Rupp would ever grant these guys an interview. It's sad, because he's our best distance runner. You are correct about the other inclusion of the link.

They both are trying equally hard. Its all about that running face. According to the circumference and the diameter of a persons forehead. People with bigger foreheads makes a runners face look more intense during a physical activity. If you compare the size of derricks and Rupps forehead derricks running face looks more epic. My conclusion is that if Rupp were to shave his hair line back not only will he look like hes trying harder but you will change your perception of Rupp.

He was 21 when he made worlds, 22 in the olympics, and he was a professional sponsored by Nike.

Your conclusion is unfinished. Rupp needs a Pre-style mustache, maybe a pointy goatee. GOATs need Goatees.

I have a feeling that 45 years from now kids will be talking about how great Rupp AND Derrick were. In the end, one will hold multiple American records and the other will chase Africans in championship races albeit always coming up short.

I find it interesting how Rupp is criticized for sitting and kicking, and Lagat is applauded for doing the same (not accounting for ability/competition). Isn't it regarded as solid running to win with the least amount of effort possible. Not every race needs to be an attempt on a personal, national or world record.

Derrick, though tough and an outstanding runner as well, is not racing nearly as well. Waiting till the last couple of minutes to try and outkick a guy who has much greater 1500m speed is poor judgement, but that's what he did in both races this weekend. Dumb running IMO, not guts. But maybe he was aiming for 2nd in both races, which he did accomplish.

I think you misread my post. I didn't care for Rupp's Sr. year tactics, but added "however, he did win the (NCAA) races." He won because he didn't need to run any faster earlier in them - BUT using that tactic did hurt him against international competition.

I certainly don't applaud Lagat and see him as being an opportunist with no guts, that gets easy victories when people lollygag on the pace but otherwise never contributes anything to any race development. However, that's also due to the usually poor tactics of the others in the races he runs.

Isn't it regarded as solid running to win with the least amount of effort possible.
