remember this is the standard for allowing you to try out, not actually make the team and especially not for scholarships (and that's UC Davis a team that never goes to nationals for XC).

maybe if they loosened those walk-on restrictions and did some coaching they'd make nationals a couple times.

One of my friends was like a 9:30 guy as a junior and he's getting a full ride to a mid pack D1 school.

Full ride or full tuition? I know a lot of kids that tell others they're getting a "full ride"...but it's just tuition they're getting paid. They still have to pay for room, meal plan, books, ect.

Unless you saw the actual paperwork, realize some people embellish how much they're actually getting.

Lots of lies -- misrepresentations -- among those going to college, their coaches, parents, etc.

Lots of "committments" you see are kids who don't even sign a LOI.

Many on full rides are not. And the ones who actually are, are like many posters said, probably 75 percent academic.

Kids like to inflate what they get.

While it's possible that some kids may get full rides at lower tier schools with inferior times or a combination of athletic/academic funds, I would think it increasingly rare for a frosh, particularly at a tier 1 running school. Personally, I would think a kid would need to be sub-9:00 to get a full ride at a lesser tier school, and, if I were coaching, I wouldn't give any freshman a full ride until they prove they can contribute at the next level. Most, not all, kids who run near 100 miles per week in high school to get that elusive sub-9:00 have limited upside.

You might try to negotiate tuition or at least getting the in-state tuition rate.

If you want a full ride you'd better work on your grammar...

Very few hs elite x/c runners are going to get any money at decent division one schools unless they can already beat the times of the current scholarship athletes, most can't. Going from 5k to 8-10k is a HUGE jump for all but %.000001 of all high school distance runners. If you have speed to go along with your endurance you are much, much more likely to get a decent athletic share of the pie. Sub 4:10 (at the least), sub 1:53 and sub .50 will get you in the money at some decent BCS schools. If you go to the lower academic ones you will be able to score some academic aid to possibly go free. My son had that opportunity but took the partial to start ( more when he scores in the conference) at an elite institution and didn't receive academic ( even with outstanding grades) aid.

When talking athletic scholarships, it's all on what you can do on the track. Getting back to the original topic, no coach is going to give an unproven highschooler money before one of his existing, proven kids, especially if he's slower.

As a junior

5k - Make footlocker in XC, but preferably top 15.

3200 - Definitely sub 9:00, but preferably 8:55.

1600 - Definitely sub 4:10, but preferably 4:07

This is for a "competitive" school, which I take as a top 15 at nationals in XC type of distance program, which also uses scholarships for other track events.

At my college, the only distance guys who were on full scholarships were conference champions and/or All Americans.
