10.9 on the fly is not fast. That is an 11.5 at BEST. especially if this is hand timed. Make that more like an 11.7-8 . So dumb.
I have seen guys I train with that are 10.8 runners run 10.2's on the fly or with a run in.
Usain bolt recorded 8.7 in a relay split.

I ran 22.5 in high school, does this mean I have a shot at sub 10? I'll just mention the flying start part as an after thought.
takehome message of this thread - anyone can train like a madman, run tons of mileage & get super-fit, but unless you have great natural speed, you are f'd no matter how hard you work. plenty of guys can handle the volume that Rupp, Farah, etc. run, but it doesn't matter in the end because they don't have the raw speed to compete with the elites.
With proper sprint training and technique, I could cut that time down to 10.3-10.5.
10.9 hand timed 100m equates to about 12 flat electronic out of the blocks, which means rupp can go 23 high out of the blocks for the 200m.
that is what you need for 5000 and 10000k ever since the days of viren.
and that is not good enough a world class mile, though rupp in a "hoover" race could approach a 350 mile.
Whether it's true or not... so what? Whenever they race each other Farah outkicks Rupp. Although Rupp did beat Farah for the first time recently - but only because Farah fell over.

Yes, and that is because the guy with most energy left at the race, is the guy who usually wins, not the guy with best raw speed.

example angela williams at 5 foot even ran right about 11.04-11.10 seconds (10.96 wind aided)consistently for a decade.

The number might have some meaning and validity if it was measured properly, which no doubt it was not.
Like d said, add about a second...except in cases where the athlete has no explosive power because they haven't trained for it, and/or naturally lack it.
Rupp would be VERY lucky to run 12.3 from the blocks, more like 12.5, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Same likely with Farah.
I'd like to have been an AR-holder, even if it was in the 2-miles or some other distance event.

Have any of those douchers broken 27 in the 10k? Didn't think so. I can guarentee you that Rupp and Farah are much closer to those sprinters in their specialty than those guys would be to Rupp and Farah in the 10k.
Personally, who cares about this sprint crap. The article was about going to London and I am pretty sure Rupp has not qualified yet.

There was a little guy from LSU - 5'4 or 5'6 - who ran right around 10.00 a couple years ago, right? Football punt/kick returner. I don't think he made it to the NFL. I can't remember his name but someone else might.

Wait?! So Galen Rupp isn't a world class 100 meter runner? He can't beat Usain Bolt? OMG, I don't think I have any respect for him any more!
Trindon Holliday is short, and Andre Cason was short.
Holliday went 10.00 (+0.3), could break 10 with slightly more wind.
Cason went 9.92 (+0.3), could have broken 9.90 with slightly more wind.
Both amazing times, both amazing runners. Both short.
Also, guys like Frater (9.88, +1.0), and Fasuba (9.85, +1.7).
Holliday and Fasuba are both around 5'5"
Frater and Cason are both around 5'7"
