Kawauchi's racing schedule may or may not be ideal, but it isn't going to "fry" him if he's enjoying it. One of the things that's refreshing about him is that he seems to do and not do what he wants with his running. The "best" thing for him to do, in terms of performance, might be to quit the job he has and get into one of the corporate teams. But it seems that he doesn't want to just as it seems like he enjoys racing frequently. If he ever feels like he needs a break he can take one.

I agree he should do what he wants. I don't agree that racing several marathons in one season will help him reach his potential. But if he doesn't care and he's just having fun then that's fine.

Japan has a lot of elite or sub elite marathon guys (2.10 - 2.13) who can only run around 14.00/29.00 for 5000/10,000. Of all the nations, they (the Japanese) seem to be the ones who can hold their basic speed (or lack thereof) the longest. Blood and guts, as reflected in their training with a great emphasis on time trials at race pace on measured road courses, or loops in small parks throughout Japan.

Kawauchi is no exception, and his track credentials will always be limited by his lack of native speed. But he is a master of running to his max for as long as possible. A 2.05 - 2.06 marathon, though, I think is out of the question for this man. But he could be a contender in a Championship race in tough conditions or inclement weather conditions.
