I NEED my daughter to get a scholorship..but she likes the ivies

I don't coach in the Ivy League, but as a couple other posters have suggested, most Ivy League schools have large enough endowments that they are able to meet 100% of financial need. Your "family contribution" (FC) as determined by the government is the same no matter where she goes to school. Obviously an athletic scholarship can save you some money, but an Ivy league school should be able to go all the way up to your FC so that you are not paying anything beyond what the government says you are capable.

Do your research well and talk to the coaches and financial aid departments at the schools she is interested in when she is going through the recruiting process.

Running can get her in.

If she is serious about applying, she should take SAT's in January and subject tests in May. Ivy coaches will want this info. She can repeat the tests in June if she isn't happy with the results. For a highly sought recruit, at least one score over 700 is a good thing, with the others mid 600's or higher. The less sought after will need higher.

There is actually a separate admissions process at several of the schools for top recruits where admissions will review the application in the early fall and can give a decision by mid October.

Others have spelled out financial aid at Ivys. It is best to apply to several, especially Harvard, as it has the largest endowment and best aid. Other Ivys will match their offer. She should do this even if she prefers one of the other Ivys.

Another reason to consider financial aid vs scholarship: if she changes her mind at some point about college running, and many do, it is nice to not be running on scholarship. The Ivy schools are overflowing with activities and a D1 athlete is not going to be able to participate in any of them except her sport. It is far easier to quit the team at an Ivy than at a scholarship school, where you are essentially bound by contract to run if you want to stay in school. This is important and you should give it a lot of thought. A young person only gets one shot at college - committing as a junior to run 4 years in college is a very big decision, especially if you are doing it for your parent and not yourself.

I am currently a senior in high school and I am looking at Harvard and Columbia for the ivies. I would be running in college as well. What many people don't know is that the ivies have 100% need-based financial aid. They have you fill out a CSS profile an then they use their formula to figure out how much your family would be able to pay realistically, and then they cover the rest. The ivies all have such huge endowments that it's really not a problem for them to do this for all of their students. As far as running getting her in, if she is fast enough as it is, then the coaches there can "support" her application right away, and she will be pretty much assured a place. If they aren't fast enough to meet the standards, but they are still very good, she may have to apply and get accepted on her own, and then the coach can support her admission and get her taken care of. From the last 6 months of being recruited by these schools, this is the advice I have. I hope it helps!

Out into the world alone? Don't be so dramatic. It'll be just like 13th grade and having a job after school (or during the summer, then she won't have to work during school). Do the rest of us a favor and raise a woman.

Do you have to estimate with one month left in the year? Maybe you are factoring bonuses or commissions? Nevertheless, you have an accurate picture. And a 10:32 should get a great scholarship at countless schools. So look into the ivies and look into several other top schools that do give athletic scholarships.

you sure it was a 10:32? No Sophomore girls in the country ran that time last year..

Those rankings do not have all dual meet results

Ivies give a lot of financial aid. Check it out. Call someone at a school. I think Harvard waives tuition if the family makes below some amount of money.

Also, I think the Ivies are largely over-rated depending on what she wants to do. If she wants to go into government work or get elected to office then maybe it makes sense, otherwise you can get a very good education in a lot less expensive places.

Dartmouth has an excellent program and results to show for it.

Stanford would also be a good choice if top notch academics and strong athletics is the sought after mix. It also has scholarships.

Caveat emptor: Just a word of caution - take a look at this years results before considering Harvard if running is at all important to her. And contrast those results with their recent recruits, especially on the mens team. Draw your own conclusions.

Isn't it a 4.0 scale? I had friends go to Ivy League schools with 3.6's and 3.7's, which is higher than I had and I got into all the top liberal arts schools I applied to...we all had ~1500 on the boards, but what is this BS about not taking 4.1???

If she's Asian her shot of getting into an Ivy, USC or Stanford is 1/3 if she is white. Doesn't matter is she's 6th generation Asian-American or of she has never set foot in the U.S.A. Dumb part is there are 5 billion Asians in the world. Asians can be pale white Aryans (Turks, Iranians, Syrians), half African Semites (Jews, Kurds, Iraqis), Orientals (Japanese, Koreans, Chinese, Mongolians), Christians (Palestinians, Lebanese), Arabs (Jordanians), Midnight Black (Saudis, Iranians, Sri Lankans, Pakistanis, South Indians). It's the stupidest discrimination ever that Stanford, USC, and Ivy League does to Asians. I know Cal Tech and MIT don't. CMU I don't know. U of Cali is public and feds made them stop discriminating 30 years ago. Other publics and privates aren't of interest to Asians so it's not an issue.

Many problems with women stem from the fact that daddies chose the easy route:

- we men are never present @home

- but when, we just play the "my-little-princess" card and get unconditional love from daughters

This leads to

- high-maintanance women

- problematic realtionships because of expectations not-lower-than-a-prince, because of adequacy

- and for me as a bachelor I can only choose from 2nd-hand women because earlier in life they are generally unbearable -- before "grounded" for at least one time

So you're willing to go broke because your little princess has her sights set on an Ivy League School. Spoiled brat. I would have loved to have gone to any college of my choice if I'd had the money. I went to an in-state school, worked full time (multiple jobs) year round. Why is your kid entitled? Will it hurt her little ego to go to a smaller, more affordable school? Grow some balls.

Why is always about what the kid wants. Be a parent, not her best friend. If she wants to go to an Ivy League school ask her how she is going to pay for it.
