In his intro remarks of Jannequin Bennett's book Very Vegetarain, Carl wrote that he became vegan in July of 1990.
WC Gold- 100m(a WR of 9.86, PB), 1991.
WC Silver- LJ, 1991 (outstanding competiton w/ Mike Powell)
O Gold- LJ, 1992 & 1996 (a fluke?)
WC Bronze- 200m 1993
Those marks and results are very competitive.

The truth is, most distance runners or endurance athletes in general, vegetarian or not, are much closer a vegan diet than to the average American diet when it comes to meat consumption.
After you've cut about 90% of the saturated (animal) fats from the average diet, whether you want to be a vegetarian, or eat some meat from time to time, comes down to personal choice, social circumstances, taste, ethics etc.
