He didn't. You are right, I flew off the handle with that uncalled for cynical remark. I apologize.

I just don't think we should place varying levels of value on an individual who dies at a marathon based on their competitive status. Ryan Shay's death a few years ago at the Olympic trials in NYC were as much a tragedy as Will Caviness' today.

Wow, you don't see these callow posts on Track and Field News. The guy died and people are complaining about his times, which are very good for any 35 year old.

Yep that is a good theory, wouldn't be surprised if that was true.

I watched the WGN broadcast last night, I was really sadden to hear the story.

I ran past what I believe was this man, laying on the road. It was roughly 100 yard away from taking the left to head over the bridge. I ran 3:17 and there was a man in a green singlet laying motionless with about 6 to 7 EMTs by his side. After running by and looking at him all I could think about was "please tell me that guy isn't dead". It's truly sad, the man pushed himself for a great cause and went through 25.8 miles of pain to that. Shame on the people harassing him over his time. 3:05 would've gotten him roughly 1,000th place. Great time, great overall place, sad end result to a man fighting for a good cause.

3:05 would get you 130 out of 3340 in his age group. Top 4%. Now I am certain this is nowhere near as fast as you could run. You are probably in that odd-ball area of being able to run a 2:20 to 2:45. Nowhere near being able to call yourself an elite or actually make a living at running, but you pursue your little dream and pretend you are a pro. I bet you and Moses probably hung out after the race. Maybe your sponsor picked you up at your suite and took you to a table at Alinea after your big race? You are the man. This guy knew enough about running to know he was not an elite, you on the other hand seem to lack that knowledge.

here in UK there were 4 deaths in Great North Run in 2005. Half marathons can be just as dangerous.

1st death at Chicago out in 4 years, so that's 1/140,000.

Obvious troll is obvious.

Initial findings from the autopsy this morning were inconclusive as to cause of death. His father in law confirmed to the media that Will Caviness was trying to qualify for Boston (-10 BQ). He was known to run the 18 miles to overnight duty at the fire station from his home and the following day run the 18 miles back.

What a shame. I feel for his wife and two young children in this time of loss and grief.

Omigosh sooo close, running for that BQ. I hope he didn't know what hit him and maybe he died thinking he was going to Boston next year.

I ran Boston in 1996. That year, there was a 60-year-old Swedish man who crossed the finish line, took two steps, and fell dead of cardiac arrest.

I always thought that would be the BEST way to go.

That tinyurl link someone posted leads me to believe he was going for a sub-3. Not the most ideal day to PR. RIP

I assume people think Mosop wasn't pushing that hard, otherwise his heart would have exploded too.

Half marathons can be riskier, particularly when it's hot, because people tend to go faster so the chance of overheating can be greater.
