Why do you take issue with this and not pharmaceutical or used car sales?
I'll throw out any sort of sales or someone that comes into contact with bodily fluids and doesn't mind it.
That is actually a good question, but I have an answer. Before I answer, I want to be clear that I am not defending tobacco. I hate tobacco. That said, I do think Pharmaceutical sales is MUCH worse than tobacco.
First of all, tobacco is known, by everyone, to be risky. People assume the risk and proceed. While controlled, it is also an OTC product. Consumers choose to buy it based on demand. Also, lets not forget that tobacco companies barely advertise, not that they wouldn't if allowed.
On the other hand, Pharmaceuticals have seen a prolific increase in advertisements in the past 5 years. Why? Why are they advertising controlled substances to consumers on TV and in magazines? Physicians need to decide who needs pharmaceuticals, not consumers. Why would you want consumers asking for drugs by name? That is horrible for everyone involved but the Pharma companies, of course. I won't even go into how the drug reps try to bribe doctors into prescribing their medicines with donuts and free lunches. The whole thing is sleazy.
I think the whole used-car salesman thing is based on people lying directly to consumers to make a sale. I won't argue that; I think it depends on the individual car salesman. I am sure there are both good and bad ones.

The sleaziest person I've personally met is a televangelist. I'm a devout Christian, but the televangelist I met was awful. He reminded me more of the devil than a man of God.
Advertising, because your job is to create profit through deception and trickery. It works on some people but for most it's just annoying. We only tolerate you because your profession subsidizes other stuff like TV.

NBA/NFL athlete.
televangelist.
You're going to put an NBA/NFL athlete in the same category as someone producing child pornography?!?!?
NBA no doubt, NFL close.
I was a salesman once for a short period of time (I'm not sleazy enough). Other salesmen and my boss told me that you have to lie to friends and relatives to make sales because they trust you. They would mark up the regular price (it was carpeting) and make a sales price that was the original regular price. A car salesmen told me they use similar tactics.
That's sleazy. Regular (adult) pornography is adults making movies, etc for adults- they know what they're doing and what they're getting into.
How about a salesman for some type of insurance.
Ah... Moriarty beat me to it

You're right, I apologize to child pornographers.

No, I don't work for one, nor do I know anyone who does. I just think that is flawed logic.
Why does it matter that it's legal? That makes something right or wrong?

My old college roommate is now an Attorney. After a week of living with him I quickly found out that he loved watching the demise of others and spreading lies for amusement. Now he gets paid to do it.

No, I think smoking is wrong. I also think fast food is wrong, etc. Whether or not it should be illegal is another story.
I just think the holier-than-thou attitude that all tobacco companies are evil is played out, that is all.

How refreshing and original! Someone has lawyer stories that will make you think lawyers are scum of the earth. What is your profession? I think people tend to dump on lawyers more often than many other professions because most people need lawyers when they are in a very stressful situation. The experience is most likely not going to be a happy one, regardless of how good the lawyer is.

Says the guy who loves watching the new Nike running commercial.
Face it, ads can be great. They help a brand establish an identity.
People live their lives based around brand identities... (BMW, Ralph Lauren, Bud Light, Nike)
...even those who claim that they don't... (Whole Foods, Dr. Bronners, American Apparel)
You just hate advertisers that suck at their jobs.
