I have to agree with sprint geezer. 44.6 is "okay". Mediocre. Nothing special. NCAA's is usually won by that time. So a collegiate is owning the rest of the 400m world. Thats terrible. A pathetic year in the 400 that could have seen Tyson Gay winning.
If you dont run below 44.5 then your nothing special.

nahhh not so sure. 44.5 (or anything in the 44's) is still a world class time. sure, it's not michael johnson special but it's still extremely good.

Sprint Geezer, you have to judge each athlete relative to his peers. We have no evidence that time moves at the same speed each and every year. 44.64 could be worth 43.xx in 1997. We have no way to know.
Whew, well that's a relief! Kirani James won't have any trouble at the World Chapmionship now that Sprint Geezer thinks he looks good! Thank goodness for that!!!

Kirani is a great young talent at 400 meters, exciting to watch. However, his DOB is questionable. He's listed as 18 turning 19 in September and he's going into his Junior year of college. Something just doesn't add up. He clearly reloaded after ncaa's. I don't think we've seen his best yet. The 400 is a toss up at worlds. Will Meritt be strong enough to get through the rounds? I also thought Sanya looked equally as impressive. She hasn't demonstrated that form since before she got married. If she gets out like that I don't think Felix can respond. Allison Felix is a beast though.
The run looked great, but James only looked "pretty good".

What is questionable about his age?? He is indeed 18 years old; he entered Alabama right out of secondary school. Most kids in the Caribbean complete their secondary school education by age 16.
You certainly you can't take anything away from James, but there have been other athletes running around the same time at about the same age such as Quincy Watts, Steve Lewis and LaShawn Merritt for example. Steve Lewis ran sub-44 and won an Olympic goal medal probably only a couple of months older than James.
Notwithstanding the fact that James is only 18 teen, 44.62 in most years would not make the top-20 list. James is very impressive, but I am not ready to crown him the future of the 400m.
