No drugs, no glory. You can see it now, since Jamaica instituted drug testing.
Tyson picked not the best year to have surgery, but if this is the true drug-free Bolt (and not actually the effect of injury that won't be there next year) we are looking at, I say Gay wins the gold in London.
What happened to the Jamaican miracle of ’08 and ’09?
In 2009, Jamaica was forced by the IAAF and WADA to institute a drug testing program and in 18 months, half of the female medalists from the ’08 Olympics and ’09 World Championships have either disappeared or come back down to earth. The only person who has improved or even match their performances from 2 years ago is Kaliese Spencer, who was only about 21 back then. VCB is one who has improved, but she has been very good for a long time.
Prior to ’08, Shelly Ann had an 11.3x PR in the 100m, the following year she runs 10.73 and wins the Olympic gold medal. Btw, that is a bigger improvement than FloJo made in one year. In 2007 Melaine Walker was a good NCAA caliber hurdler with a 400m flat PR of 52x; in 2008 Melaine almost equals her 400m flat PR going over hurdles. Melaine always had talent, but off the top of my head I don’t think she ever won a World Junior title, or an NCAA title, but in 08/09, she wins the Olympic goal medal, the following year the WC and runs the 2nd fastest time in history, she wins the World Athletes final in ’08 and ’09. Brigitte Foster is someone I remember as always making 100 hurdle finals , but usually losing out on the medals to the Americans. I think she did win a medal in the 2000 or 2004 Olympics, but she was getting slower each year, which in OK when are in your mid-30s. I thought Brigitte Foster had retired ad then in 2008 she wins the Olympic goal medal and runs he 2nd fastest time in her career. In 2008, Brigitte Foster and Delloreen Ennis ran some of their best times and folks…they are from the Gail Devers era.
Interesting, athletes like Sheri-Ann, Vonette Dixon, Veronica Campbell and Aleen Baily who previously trained in the U.S., all of a sudden were struggling to makes teams against the athletes who stayed on the island and weren’t drug tested. I don't recall the exact details, but 2008 or 09 there were about a half dozen Jamaicans busted for doping, but they got off on technicality.
With all of that said, I have always thought Bolt was clean becasue was so good at a young age.
