I really like Tony, but unquestionably, there are few coaches out there who have done less with more than Tony at Cal. You are the flagship of the UC system. You are fully funded. You have a tremendous academic institution. You can get JUCO tranfers in. You recruit in the most populous, deepest track and field talented state in the nation. All of this and what is there to show for it? They should have big, deep, great teams competing for PAC 10 titles and scoring 20-30 points minimum at NCAAs in track each year.
So yes, sadly, one of the earlier posters is correct. Cal sucks. But only because they want to. If they paid for a real coach who was motivated to compete with Oregon and Stanford, they could easily make a dent.
I used to feel the same way about UVA until Vig got there. That said, didn't Vig turn them down, or was is Shoemacker, after Huffins left?
