The article that stated German has the record at 8:34 was written on June 10, 2011. Verzbicas ran his 2 mile time on June 4, 2011. I am pretty sure that is 6 days later.
An average of 82 people die from lightning strikes in the U.S. each year compared to about 120 people dieing EVERY DAY in car accidents.
We should ban cars and make kids walk or bike to school... oh wait, then they might get kidnapped by a pedophile... maybe we should just use common sense. If there was lightning in the area prior to the start of the race, don't start it. If it starts to hail heavily with lightning, in the middle of the race, stop it. When there's one lighting strike in the distance and there's only a minute to go in a distance race, use common sense and let it finish. If it's against the rules, change them!
When I was in high school, 10 years ago, the gym teachers stopped allowing us to borrow footballs at lunch time because they were afraid that somebody would get injured and the school would be sued. It's these f***ing parents and lawyers that keep contributing to the pussification of America.
If they have one lap to go, let them finish. There were only like 3 kids in the race at that point and they would have taken a max of 70 seconds for their last lap. Rules are meant to be broken, and Rosa was about to set the New Jersey record by a lot.

And from an outsider's perspective you appear to have an issue with authority. Get over it. The official was not smiling, as you say...of course a paranoid authority hater might see it that way.
All Americans should have an issue with authoriy. People like you on other hand can enjoy having your junk fondled by TSA, until we non-pansies get rid of your stupid rules that "make us safe."

America at its finest, ladies and gentlemen. Really, 65 seconds more (max) to finish a race? Only about 40 people are killed by lightning every year.

Morgan Pearson, the kid who won the rerun, is a class act. He ran 9:02 but said he was running a lot faster in the first race and would rather have had 3rd with a faster time. 9:02 is good enough to be D1 all american caliber in a few years if he is coached wisely and trains smart.
Super kid, like most high school distance runners. Almost all of them are class acts. He is a prime example.
I am curious what the officials would have done if lightning would have begun to strike right when they were going into the final curve? Ha,ha!
What makes the decision appear so stupid is that 1-2 minutes after they stopped the race there was still people in the stands, on the field and officials on the track.
They should have started clearing the stands and in-field so that as soon as the race finished they could be escorted to a safe area where the other people had already been moved.
Stupid, rule-focused officials. All this decision did was help them keep to the rules, not the intent of the rules.
Read the article below. I read it when it was first published, and I haven't run in threatening weather since. The officials made the right call.

I'm sure everyone is concerned about the dangers of lightning.
But the point is that the officials did nothing but increase the danger to everyone, including by their stopping of the race when they did.

I once read a story once about a person killed in a car accident. I haven't driven since. I once read a story about a plane crash where many people died. I haven't flown since. I once read a story about a guy that choked to death eating a steak. I haven't eaten steak since. I once read a story about a guy that was hit by a bus crossing the street. I haven't crossed the street since. I once read a story about a guy getting killed by his wife for arguing with her. I quickly got divorced. Etc., etc., etc.
Okay, I get it. Lightning can kill and I am going to be cautious, but I am not going to become completely paranoid. They should have finished the race while they made the announcement to clear the stadium. We are talking about 90 seconds or less difference. The officials made the wrong call.
