How I explain one month ago, Silas had a first part of season a little bit confused. In Eugene, we spoke about start with a very precise plan, for going to Daegu in the best shape. I explained him he risked not to go in the team, without a precise strategy and a full month of preparation without competitions.
Silas started to put specific training for 1500m only after Oslo (9.06), when he ran very poorly because stuck in the stomach by the elbow of another runner at the start.
During the last month, he trained with Collins Cheboi (pacer in Oslo) and the shape of both grew very well.
I came back Kenya from Boston on 30th of June, and I found them in a growing shape, before giving the last workouts :
Saturday 2.07 :
6 x 600m (rec. 3') in 1'26"2 / 1'25"8 / 1'26"3 / 1'26"6 / 1'25"8 / 1'25"2
Tuesday 5.07 :
1200 / 300 - 800 / 300 - 600 / 300 (2' rest in between the couples, and 4' between the couples) in 3'02" / 38"7 - 1'55"5 / 39" - 1'25"2 (Silas) and 1'26"5 (Collins) / 38"6
Friday, 8.07 :
3x1000m (rec. 4') in 2'31"8 / 2'34" / 2'32"5
- rec. 4' -
5x600m (rec. 1'30") in 1'29"8 / 1'31"9 / 1'29"9 / 1'30"4 / 1'29"8 (with last 200m in 25"6)
Monday, 11.07 :
2x300 in 38"2 / 37"8 + 3x200 in 24"2 / 24"4 / 24"3 + 4x150 in 17"8 / 17"7 / 18" / 17"6 (rec. 4' between every test).
Personally, I prefer to use more long recovery during the last sessions of speed, in order not to produce too much lactate, and I prefer to have some training of Aerobic Power (so, not so much lactic) one week before the race.
In this case, for Silas and Collins (and also for Caleb Ndiku Mwagangi, the World Junior Champion of cross and 1500 in 2010, training in Machakos but using my programs, that from August joins in Iten Silas and Collins), the problem was to be ready for 3 following rounds, not easy due to the level of the Championships.
But another winning key for qualifying for WCh, since Trials are in altitude, was to stay long time in Iten (or, in the case of Mateelong and Abraham Chirchir, in Nyahururu) for training only, without remaining at sea level for competitions too long time.
These are the last competition for the athletes of my group (for the track, all under the management of Gianni Demadonna) :
Silas Kiplagat (winner 1500) : June, 9 (Oslo)
Collins Cheboi (4th 1500) : June, 9 (Oslo, pacing)
Caleb Ndiku (6th 1500) : June, 10 (NY)
Thomas Longosiwa (2nd 5000) : June, 10 (NY)
Richard Mateelong (2nd 3000st) : June, 13 (Brazzaville)
Abraham Chirchir (3rd 3000st) : July, 3 (Moscow, only
going and coming back)
Wilson Kiprop (2nd 10000m) : always in Kenya, because injured durig winter
Sylvia Kibet (winner 5000m) : end of May (sick)
Prisca Jepleting (3rd 10000m) : May, 31 (Ostrava)
Different is the situation for 800m, where the adaptation to altitude is not so important. In this event, Job Kinyor (4th with his PB in 1'45"07) competed frequently in Europe and came back Kenya on Friday, 8 July, only.
