DIII Cross Country: 2011

1) NCC I wouldn’t bet against them

2) Calvin They will only be scoring 4 guys and return 5 of top 6

3) Oshkosh Return top 5 plus Stymiest if he doesn’t bomb like he did at track

4) Haverford Loose top 3 but return two 1500 AA (3 1500m Finalists)

5) St. Lawrence Return 4 of top 7 including 2 AA in XC, but nothing in track

6) Geneseo Return 3/7, including 2 AA

7) Dickinson Return 4/7

8) Stevens Point Return 4/7 including Witkowski, but he bonked in track

9) NYU Return top finisher plus 4 others, not much in track

10) Platteville Return 4/7

course at oshkosh favors 1500/5k type of guys. Winner will be under 23:50 and AA will be under 24:30

I have heard down year in terms of number and quality of distance/xc recruits for NYU on both men's and women's sides for 2011. On the men's, only one to note is Sebastian Oja of DE (Gatorade Boys XC Runner of the Year for Delaware) with PRs of 4:24 and 9:35, nothing mind blowing though.

WashU is bringing in home-grown talent, Drew Padgett (4:16, 9:17), expect him to make an immediate impact in the top7, if not the scoring top 5. I also think as the season progresses we will see more teams from the MW Region start to display national-caliber dominance.

1) NCC Definite favorites based on track and past xc nats

2) Haverford: Return several AA from xc plus 3rd place finisher in the 1500, they should like the flat course

3) Dickinson: Big improvements in track, return 4/7 plus I think 2 more sub 15 guys

4) Calvin: Good squad but look weak after 4, an injury really hurts them

5) Oshkosh: Get that home field advantage

6) St. Lawrence: Return 4 of top 7 including 2 AA in XC, but nothing in track

7) NYU: Returners may not look that impressive but they have a good program

8) Geneseo: Can they show up at nats after 2 sub-par runs there

9) Tufts: Just think they could be good, young team good recruits

10) Platteville: Return 4/7

the Connecticut College freshman is named Alex Mavrovic. He has run 14:29 and 8:27. Who knows how they landed him.

There's no way Stevens Point is a top 10 team. They return 4 of 7, but the 3 they lose are their 2, 3, and 4, and their 5, 6, and 7 were nowhere close to those guys last year. Oshkosh will be the best team in the WIAC, and I'd probably peg La Crosse as the 2nd best (solid core of Wilhelmy, Stilin, Shonat, and Harrington, with a bunch of guys gunning for those last few spots).

So on the men's side which team do you think is most likely to not live up to whatever their preseason ranking is? A team that doesn't preform well in the post-season or you think will simply be grossly overrated.

I think North Central is the definite favorite. Return the best team from last fall and had a strong spring. Kerley stepped it up big this spring. Watch for Patrick Lesiewicz to break out this fall

In my opinion, the team best equipped to give NCC a run for their money this spring is Calvin. They return 5 of top 6 from last fall's 8th place team and looking at the national lists they had a great spring. I keep seeing people say they will be weak after 4 spots. I don't think so. They had lots of success in the 1500/5k this spring, so they too like Haverford should like the nationals site. Here is what they have returning:

Nick Kramer--finished 16th last fall. Followed that up with a 4th place finish in the indoor 5k. Outdoor he ran 14:17 and 8:56 and finished 3rd in the steeple and 4th in the 5k.

Next five returners did this...

2. 9:16 steeplechase, 14:55.88 5k

3. 30:29 10k and 14:48 5k

4. 30:37 10k

5. 3:50.73 1500, made finals at outdoor nationals

6. 3:50.60 1500. Indoor runner-up in the mile, 4th outdoor 1500. Ran 14:49.69 in the 5k.

Looks strong to me...

Alex Gomes will win the national championship this year, as a team. It's been a long time coming, but he's going to do it.

I believe Pat Lesiewicz is transferring to Notre Dame...but don't expect NCC to miss a beat.

Anyone know anything about North Central or any of the other top teams recruiting classes?

Is this for real?? Their other freshmen (now sophomores) are close to his 5k PRs now, but losing a 9:13 HS 2miler is certainly a hit. With NCC's depth though I doubt they take a substantial blow.
