maybe rupp is a fighter but we don't really see that because of all the excuses and ridiculous costumes that salazar provides for him. in fact, my bet is that salazar actually diminishes his confidence with all this 'wait until the last second' and 'wear the gimp mask' business. the bottom line is that while these antics embarrass all distance runners, he has high ambitions, he trains hard, and he seeks out the best races against the toughest competition. so what if he doesn't waste the gift on some midseason third rate college xc meet? as for solinsky, he gave rupp the chance to sit and kick on him those last 900m and solinsky was the tougher man that day.

anyone who uses solinsky sitting on rupp as an excuse is clearly an idiot; rupp is the most well know sitting piece of shit in the history of the sport. he did it to chelenga his entire senior year. he just got what he deserved that race, so if people argue different then none of rupps wins in college should count

Rupp is a great talent, no doubt. But that's where it ends. If I were Solinsky I'd use Rupp as a competitive whipping boy too. Rupp and Salazar's excuses, the arm condoms/ breath rites, THE WHINING, the pro/am debacle, the oxy house, BALCO, etc, clearly define them both as terminal victims at best, ethically questionable at worst.
Distance running, by it's nature, is a minimalist sport in which a great competitor can arise from the poverty of Ethiopia or Kenya. A great distance competitor will always be defined by sheer tenacity and drive, not tech and toys.
Rupp is the antithesis of a great distance competitor.
The funny thing about almost everyone that has posted on this threading ripping into Galen is that none of the have ever met him. If you do end up meeting him, you will realize he is a very nice person who commits himself fully to the task at hand. We've entered the age of science. To not use all available training tools would be foolish; to think that Schumacher's group doesn't do the same stuff is as well.

the stanford 10,000 was the best 10,000 for Americans since Mills won gold, but someone apparently has to be the good guy and someone has to be the bad guy in people's brains
here is the truth of the matter...Rupp made that race, the rabbits did a fantastic job and Rupp pushed the pace courageously to make sure they stayed on record pace, the effort definitly cost him at the end, would he have beaten solinsky? probably not, but he definitly would have had more left to batter with the 2 african guys and maybe shave off a few more seconds
Solinsky also ran an incredible race, it was his first 10,000 on the track and rather than run conservatively mid pack to see what he could do he strung it out there with the lead group on AR pace, and then when he felt great, he still didn't wait till the last 300 but blasted them all in the final 800 for an AR...balls
these guys are both americans, from the same club, and run for affiliated coaches, yet somehow everytime this race is brought up it turns into a pissing contest...its f***ing retarded

It is unbelievable the amount of crap Rupp receives. The "blue-collar" group with Schumacher, Teg, Solinsky, etc is every bit as priveledged and pampered. Why would Solinsky not just say he is going to run one or the other race? How much crap would Rupp receive if he pulled that. Remember in college when Jerry would have his guys run 4 miles of a CC race and drop out. Talk about silly games!
Solinsky didn;t even show up to Nationals last year and Teg ran the 1500 as a tune-up. Imagine if Rupp pull moves like that.

I first met GR when he was in high school. He's a nice enough guy, true. Trains hard, true. Salazar is a different story.
Let's level the playing field. Let's assume that all Americans have access to the same technology and resources. Do they really?
Who was it that required the force of Nike's legal department to have them reinstated as an NCAA amateur?

Bottom line: Rupp + Salazar is one of the most successful long-term (high school to pro) coaching relationships in U.S. history. Who else compares? Ryun/Timmons?

AlSal needs to keep quiet a bit about all the science and allergies and excuses, though. The mask and breathright strips were no doubt AlSal's ideas too, and I think both probably had 0 effect on Rupp's performance. AlSal hurts Rupp's image... Rupp doesn't hurt his own image. In fact, based on what I have seen, the image Rupp has built of himself is incredibly admirable: A tenacious racer who can win in a kick or from the front. Someone who will push the pace when it begins to lag. Someone who is not afraid to challenge himself against the best competition... and who in fact, seeks it out. Someone who will sacrifice himself for his team. Someone who trains incredibly hard AND smart. Someone who is gracious in victory and defeat. Someone who understands that running, though important to him, pales in comparison to many other important things in our world. By all accounts, Rupp seems like a great guy who is incredibly fast, disciplined, and yes, lucky (fortunate). However, good on him... Rupp made his own luck by being blessed with great genes and by having a solid head on his shoulders that has driven him to greatness. Not sure why anyone would begrudge that.

Here we have the two best Americans EVER at 10000m putting it on the line in the best international 10000m race in the past....I don't even know how many years. How bout we all get behind these guys and cheer them on!!!! Personally, I'm totally psyched to see both of them entered into this race.

All of my negativity toward Rupp actually comes from Salazar. Rupp works and races hard and I love that. His image is destoyed by AlSal's one-liners. If I take away everything that comes from AlSal (pulling out of 'non-certified' CC courses, bailing and making excuses related to pollen, whining that he got ridden to an AR last year, etc) I love how this guy races and competes. The problem is he competes a few times a year and AlSal opens his mouth with some crap that makes Rupp look bad every day. Hard to get past that.
