What percentage of animals can run a 4 minute mile?

I once ran a tempo run, 4 miles in 20:30. Someone's dog showed up in the first half-mile and started running with me, and he finished the whole thing and didn't look/act tired at the end at all. In fact, he just sort of turned around and bounded off in the direction from whence he came. I'm guessing that a lot of medium-sized (not rats, not elephants) four-legged animals could probably get under 4:00 if you could get them running.

i'm sure there are dogs, coyotes and wolves that can run a mile under 4 minutes pretty easy.

The stuff about beetles was correct. Flying would include many more. I'm not sure sure about swimming. I don't think most fish could swim a mile at that pace, but some aquatic mammals probably could.

You're still talking about insects and arachnids making up 80% of all animals, including swimming and flying ones. I think we can all agree that no insect can do it, so that gives you a maximum of 20% if every non insect in the world can cover a mile in four minutes. Your 27% guess is way wrong.

Way less than .01% of humans can run a mile in 4:00 or under. Does that mean humans should count?

He said if a single member of that species could do it, so yeah.

Dragonflies can go 35 miles an hour.

Sharks can too.

There are 5 baboon species and 2 drills/mandrills. These guys can run down rabbits easily and have a build that suggests that they could go the distance. No guarantee but I'd say all of them are a pretty good bet to have members capable of a 4 minute mile. Could also be a few other ground dwelling species (rhesus and so forth) with a shot.

Most big cats and most medium size (and not a few small ones) dogs can jog a four minute mile. Your post is hilarious though.

Great, Usain Bolt can run 23 mph, I don't think he can run a 4 minute mile.

Cheetahs can run 75 mph, but only for about a 1/4 mile.

Top speed has nothing to do with being able to run sub 4.

I highly doubt a dragonfly has the ability to fly that fast for a mile unless caught in a storm. The amount of energy required is more than it could store in its body.

You're pretty much going to have to be warm blooded to accomplish this, except for some fish.

Not quite sure what you are getting at or what you've added to the discussion.

My post listed big cats and canines as species that would qualify. So now you come on and say most big cats and dogs could do it? Again, what exactly are you adding to the discussion?

Sticking with land-based vertebrates (so, flying but not swimming) the number would be close to 50%.

Bird species: 10,000

Bat species: 1,100

Nearly all of these could do it. The 50 odd flightless bird species are too few to really matter. Even the 300 or so runners is really in the noise at this point.

So, roughly 11,000 out of 23,000 could go under 4:00 for the mile.
