With the exceptions of Hunt and Pfeffer, none of the people on the had much success on in college XC/track. Ritz and some others probably could have run well under 2:20. Hulst ran big mileage in HS so I’m surprised he didn’t run much faster than 2:27.

I don't think many, if any of those guys took the distance seriously. It was more or less a hard training run for Hulst.
I met a guy on the roads during this past winter who said he ran Boston 1973? as a 17 year old in 2:27. I couldn’t find his name but I believe back then you had to be 18 to get in.
His name is Leonard Jansen, age 69 now from the Philly area, if I remember correctly.
