Hall was really inconsistent in college, with a few breakout moments such as his runnerup in XC and his fast 5k senior year.
And Rupp, as talented and successful as he was in high school, only dominated the NCAA during his senior season.

So after doing a google search on a recent interview with his coach I found this article:

Apparently he is training like a 5k guy but focusing on the 1500 this season. It seems like Smith's attitude is "stick with what works" and race him at the shortest distance he is competitive at. He may just be lacking some speed right now, it's hard to say.
After the race, I saw him with a ice pack on his right shin.
I ran 3:45.09 in college and have got to say I was pretty satisfied. My goal was 3:43 but 3:45 was always and is a nice time for my career as a runner. I figure it equaled to a 4:00 mile or faster so it puts a smile on my face to be able to tell my 2 children that I was fortunate to run a 4:00 mile in my day. German might not be the stud he was a few years ago but he is still capable of it.
3:45 is not equivalent to a 4:00 Mile. You might be able to argue that 3:45 is equal to a 4:00 over 1600m. Don't forget that 1 Mile is about ~1610m.

Everyone and their brother's uncle? Complicated family dynamics aside, I do agree with you for the most part. People are really quick to write off these guys. Its a bit dramatic to say the guy is done for good and won't be the same again. Lets at least give him until the track season is over before we thunder down any negativity about his future. I don't know if he'll bust out a big race this season (I hope he does) but this kind of debate is starting to get old.

This is somewhat unrelated, but at the same time pretty related.
I go to OSU. I was walking to the cross country course today and Kirubel Erassa and Ryan Prentice (at least, I think it was him. I didn't get a good look at his face) ran by. I heard Ryan say to Kirubel "This program f***in blows. When I got here, I was the 8th man on the team. It f***in blows, man." as he ran by me.
Now, I am a big fan of the OSU xc team. And I don't want to believe it. But to hear it from some of the runners themselves was disheartening. Maybe the last two championships were short term successes and the program isn't as sustainable as everyone hopes.
anyone know whats germans mileage is at? i saw somewhere it was 80 freshman year right off the bat. wonder if he the same, a little higher, or lower cuz of the injuries.
look at the example of Ryan Gregson who for a long time was fiercely argued to be as talented as German, he has been back a couple of weeks and is running very fast. That is what class does.
German should be able to run 40km per week, and have 3 months out with child labour and still be able to run 3.44 in the races he is in... something is wrong, or he is just not as good as everyone would like to believe.
Injuries will do that to any runner
People overestimate the mental side or competitive drive - if you are not fit it counts for f all, although sometimes when well off your pr form its hard to try as hard for not much result

this sort of thing shows the folly of choosing colleges by running programs - dude probably could have gone to Stanford or Colorado but chooses Ok State for running. So now what does he have? A mediocre running history so far and probably a mediocre education.

You mean the same program that won the NCAA Cross Country Chamionships last year? You must have forgot.

I'm just saying what one of the team members said.
Also, I'll be surprised if they don't win nat champs again this year. The recruiting has been tops, but Im afraid the coaching doesn't seem to be matching that. And when word gets out that the coaching is subpar, then the recruiting will falter as well. It's common sense.
The coaching is to blame. Plain and simple. He needs to finish up his stint in the program and go pro. We don't need another Alan Webb - we already have one roller coaster performer.

???? uhhhh 4:00, 8:34 double at State, 2 mile HS record, solo 3:55 mile indoors, NCAA championship as a freshman, and Junior 5k record 5 seconds away from Olympic A standard.
