I don't really get the I-Pad. As somebody mentioned. It doesn't replace a good smart phone. Nor does it replace having a laptop. So why get one? Not only that. If you are comparing it to the Kindle on strictly e-reader capabilities I would go with the Kindle. The Kindle DX is only $400, has free 3G and excellent readability.
You get one because it provides an extremely value function. Using a laptop with 3G while mobile on the road, no thanks. I tried that method and a tablet is superior.
While static a laptop is a better choice for doing real work.
While static and simply browsing the web, or reading, or checking travel reservations, etc., a table is superior.
The Kindle seems to have good reading capability, but when you can buy a more functional tablet, why throw your money away at something with limited options?
Stick with a Kindle if your happy with e-reading and active web browsing. If you want to do a lot more go with a more fully loaded tablet. iPad leads the pack at the moment. Most certainly, the a Kindle will add more features; Android-based would be a good move.
An "extremely valuable function?" What is that? Watching videos or playing video games in an airport? Between all the functions of a smart phone and a Kindle, I'm more than satisfied. Then when I get to a hotel room or someplace more static, a laptop is superior than a Kindle.

Oops. Meant a laptop is superior to an I-Pad. I can see an I-Pad being useful for certain people. But its very narrow. And for anyone who would just use it for reading they should seriously look hard at Kindle and save themselves a few hundred dollars.

I like the pad concept and have tried using them at work and they are real cool. I haven't bought one yet though since I need a 750GB hard drive. The great thing about pads and smartphones is that developers now have a solid open source platform now open to everyone with Google's Android OS. Companies will soon offer pads with 100% Java and Linux compliance. This means we will soon have opensource reliable mobile computing platforms that don't have to be rebooted and reconfigured. I hope to see companies add more and more devices, memory, and storage so that we won't need MacOs and Windows any longer.
Extremely functions means far beyond your ability yo comprehend. I don't play video games. I rarely watch videos on a tablet. You have a lot to learn in the world. You're being a troll.
I sure see alot of tablets and pads at the coffee shop nowadays.

I agree with the smart people here - if you don't have use for an Ipad then you're too lazy/stupid to own one anyway. Ipad has changed the lives of billions of people forever. Without it, this world would be worse off.

I've used my laptop on an airplane just fine. Maybe you have really short legs, because I rest the far edge of my laptop on my knees and the close edge is not anywhere near my testicles.

I don't think he has short legs. In economy class like we travel, we can barely keep our legs straight. The laptop is always on the lap and not on the knees. Maybe it's different in first class where you travel.
Maybe he has really big testicles.......or yours are really small.

Ha, I just flew yesterday in economy. Have never been in first class, I'm a college student.

Acer tried to promote tablets 10yrs ago, and it didn't work. Now everybody wants one, and there are at least 10 others coming out this spring
The #1 question to ask is, "what can I do on a tablet that I cannot do on smartphone or NB".
for me - do 1:1 presentations. Thats it. For that, however, a tablet that you can hand to a client is extremely effective. Letting him, "hold" this idea is a great sales technique.
As for everything else - video, reading, writing, creating presentations, coding, working with data, a NB or phone is more than adequate.
It's a bit early for tablets/pads. I want to see more features before I would switch to Android from Win7.
I don't have a smartphone nor tablet yet either. I looked at Toshiba Android Pad specs, it comes out this April, but it won't have enough hard storage for me. Currently I use a Win7 Atom Dual Core netbook, 640Gb/2GB.
For mobile / travel the big advantage is that tablets will not physically break so easily like notebooks do. You can still use a bluetooth keyboard and bluetooth mouse.
Tablets run Android / iPad and don't frequently crash and halt like Win7.
Software vendors don't have many serious apps yet for Android like Photoshop so I still need a netbook.
I expect in the months to come that new tablet products will appear. When tablets meet my needs I will switch to Android and dump Win7 forever !

If your Windows 7 actually manages to "frequently crash and halt," it probably wasn't configured properly by the OEM vendor (e.g., pre-loaded proprietary software, trial versions of commercial software, and granting the default user profile full admin privileges).
