I had the same thing, but it cleared up after I went to a running store and took a shit in a pair of compression socks.

Word ma homies
I always used to do this. It's a symptom of stress or nervousness. I don't know any of the science behind it.

Is there anyone this doesn't happen to?
I think there are people that don't get this - I definitely do. It was even worse before matches when I used to wrestle. Clearly it is some sort of stress response, but the poster The Stache is right that yawning is not well understood.
One strange thing is that I don't yawn before stressful but non-athletic activity. E.g. taking standardized tests, etc., there would be no yawning and I would actually feel more alert and 'keyed up' than before a race.
The body's natural reaction to stress. Wear a heart rate monitor and watch what happens as you yawn. typical reading for example..... 56,56,57,58,57 yawn 59,yawn 60,46,42,42,43,44,45
Your body talks to you constantly. Most people either ignore it or don't understand the language.
always yawned...still do...nerves

disagree. i find myself yawning before races as well, and i'm free to admit that i'm quite nervous, and i'm wondering what value there is in one's body trying to convince itself it's not nervous just before something very taxing and important.
It's not your body trying to convince itself it's not nervous, it's your mind.
Don't you understand, it's not an actual yawn you're doing, it's a fake yawn. An actual yawn occurs when you're tired. Don't tell me you're tired standing at the starting line.
'Your body talks to you constantly.'
Even you are bored listening to yourself and start yawning
It's a mystery why everyone thinks runners are nerds

no, it's definitely not a fake yawn...it has all the same characteristics of what you call a "real" yawn, just this happens at the start line as opposed to when i'm tired. also i agree with a previous poster, i don't yawn before big tests or any "stressful" activity that is not athletic. it's got to be the body just trying to get more oxygen, right?
also, i am yawning nonstop while reading this thread.
