One of the painful things about our time is that those who feel certainty are stupid, and those with any imagination and understanding are filled with doubt and indecision.

Good one.
Erma Bombeck: The only reason I would take up jogging is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.
Frank Shorter: You have to forget your last marathon before you try another. Your mind can't know what's coming.
Gene Thibeault: If you start to feel good during an ultra, don't worry, you will get over it.
Johnny Gray: I'm going to go out a winner, even if I have to find a high school race to win my last race.
Robin Williams: I love running cross country....On a track, I feel like a hamster.
Milton Berle: My doctor told me that jogging could add years to my life. I think he was right. I feel ten years older already.
From a Running Shirt: It's a hill. Get over it.
Dr. George Sheehan: It's very hard in the beginning to understand that the whole idea is not to beat the other runners. Eventually you learn that the competition is against the little voice inside you that wants you to quit.
Henry David Thoreau: Me thinks that the moment my legs begin to move, my thoughts begin to flow.
In regards to just getting it done... "If you have to eat a turd, eat it in one bite... don't nibble on it"
And Eminem in his song Til I Collapse...
"'Cause sometimes you feel tired,
feel weak, and when you feel weak, you feel like you wanna just give up.
But you gotta search within you, you gotta find that inner strength
and just pull that shit out of you and get that motivation to not give up
and not be a quitter, no matter how bad you wanna just fall flat on your face and collapse."

Best running advice/quote:
"Start slowly, then taper off."
not sure what this is from:
as Frank Shorter once said, the knife slices into you and the pain just becomes a constant. You must embrace the pain. You use it as the barometer. Repeat miles at near four minutes? Fast 400 meters? This is not running for fun. This is running to see what one is made of, to see where the limits are. This is character building, and the effects last a lifetime. Trying to see what you are truly made of means risking failure, and for many, that is a frightening place to be. Some are not brave enough to go there, some have to go there, some are drawn there.
good running quote. I don't have a favourite life quote.
On passing Keino down the home straightaway and seeing him give up - "Don't quit dammit!" - Marty Liquori
"When I race my mind is full of doubts - who wil finish second, who will finish third?"

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
John 14:6
The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Oh, please. May God bless Christopher Hitchens, but he's hellbent on depicting great persons of faith as terrible evildoers. His "The Missionary Position" is a lame attempted character rape of that villain of villains - Mother Teresa (yes, I'm sarcastic). Mr. Hitchens also wrote in "The Nation" in 1981, based on uncharitable interpretation of mere tissue of evidence, and despite quite a lot to the contrary, that Maximilian Kolbe, now St. Maximilian Kolbe, was anti-Semitic. St. Max, with tremendous heroism, requested that he, a 47-year old Catholic priest, be put to death instead of a married Polish father at Auschwitz. He and nine others were starved for days in a bunker. The Nazis ultimately dispatched Fr. Kolbe with a lethal injection.
