Hell, why not throw Webb and Dathan in there; have Webb pace through 5000m in 13:25 and then drop out do go do some workout on the grass, and have Ritz either pace through 7000-8000 and drop out and join Webb or he could finish if he's feeling good

What a waste of money. Why not run the Payton Jordan meet at Stanford in May. The weather is always perfect and it is the same time zone where he lives so it will not impact his body as much.
The guy seems like he gets sick a lot even with all of the Nike resources. Now he is going to spend about 28 hours on a germ filled airplane to run a 10k race where there will be no potential sub 27 minute runners in the field.
no drug testing on the flight.
No mention of AR shot in anything official that I've read. It's a long way to go for a race, but perhaps he's down there for a training camp or something and decided to have a cruise in a local meet down there.
NZ record must be about 28 minutes so not likely to be any of those guys racing.
There is absolutely nothing in the article to even remotely suggest an American record attempt. Learn to read and comprehend before hyping something like this.
It said Galen should shatter the New Zealand soil record of 27:10, that suggests it somewhat. It is a stretch though.
Lets get a couple of facts right:
Its not a 28hr flight to NZ, its 12hr max
The NZ record is well under 28min
Jake Robertson has been asked to get him to 6000m in 16:12 which shouldn't be a stretch for big Jake
Salazar is bringing two "non-american squad members" (presumably Kenyans) to help with pacing
The last time a world class meet was held in Christchurch, New Zealand the 10,000m was won in 27:42 and the 1500m in 3:32.....and that was 1974!!!! One of the best places in the world to run a fast time, its hard to understand why more northern hemispherians don't go there in the Southern Summer to race rather than cough up a lung running in germ-filled indoor tracks or sub-zero temperature conditions. Salazar has recognised it.
Rupp will be able to spend time training in 20-25deg celcius conditions while in NZ, on endless forest trails which immediately gives him the jump on those trudging around the snow up north.
Not to mention getting to see a country that few Americans have the sense to visit. Ask anyone who has been, it is the best country on earth.

This is turning into a very impressive meet where guys like Galen can run fast if they need to.
The flight is only 12hr and the time difference at this time of the year is only 4hr.
The last two years it's been running, both, the top kiwis and the stronger Aussies have come over to race and have run well in perfect conditions.
Nick is looking for a World Champs A time and I'm sure many of the Aussie guys are.
As Wejo said it works in with Galen having two seasons, an indoor, a solid break and an outdoor. I guess you could consider this outdoor race an end to his "indoor season" and then he has enough time to get ready for his outdoor season.
Also there is the opportunity to go to Aus after this and race a meet over there. Nick Willis and his crew are doing this.

Why should he run a 10k at all at this stage, when he already has a valid qualifying time for Daegu?
As mentioned, international flight from LAX to Auckland or Christchurch is nowhere near 28 hours. From my own experience, time zone adjustment is easier when flying west that it is going the other way.
This had been set up a couple of weeks ago, confirmation was just made today. When Salazar approached the meet, he did indeed mention to them that they would like to go for the AR. I wouldn't be surprized if Sal was trying to keep it low key though.

to the people asking, why not run payton jordan in May? A: because it is in May!!
Rupp may be attempting the AR, or he may not. Either way he is going to get a good low pressure 10km hit out in, in February. He can hit his A standard and then go away and have march/april/may/june to get ready for the real outdoor season that runs july-october.
The hardest thing about being an American athlete is trying to race an outdoor season that goes for so long, its fine if your only good enough to do the early US races, but if your like Galen and are going to be going right through til September you need to factor in a break somewhere.
And as someone else said, its warm in Australia / New Zealand this time of year, training will be a joy for a change, and injuries less of a problem. Working out outdoors on warm bouncy tracks and grass.

Call me crazy but he would be doing a 10K because he is a professional 10K runner.
