Duke coach shows no class.....

what game were you watching Scott? if you don't think K completely demonstrated what a jackarse he really is with his behavior, you really aren't seeing situations for what they are. Certainly anyone, particulary in heated games, has a right to get upset. But what kills me time and time again is when K pulls this stuff and isn't called for it yet HIS MENTOR, Bobby Knight, and several other coaches, Gary Williams and Jim Calhoun, up until recently, for example, are crticized for the same sideline behavior. When it walks like a duck, talks like a duck and drops F-bombs on national TV like a sailor, let's call him for what he is and not pretend he is Jesus H. Christ and walks on water.

Hey Phil, I'll stand by my comments. I had the game muted while listening to the greatest rock band of all-time, Led Zep but could read Coach K's lips just fine. If (operative word here) he was hurling the 'f word' and I were a ref, I'd bear in mind the situation and allow him some room for venting. Calling a tech at that point in the NCAA Div 1 semifinal game would've been overkill.

I read 'foul' coming from him, not the 'f word'. He was filled w/a bit more passion than you or I at the time and think it's unfair to judge the degree of his outburst.

I do not mean to imply the man is a total a-hole and cannot act responsibly. Like others, I am trying to point out what a hypocrit the guy seems to be. He is no different than other coaches, yet takes a holier than thou attitude. Old Man in the Sea's post described my opinion succinctly. Ummmmmm, My post about the calls of the game was intended to be sarcastic. I was attempting to show Scott that you cannot take a single call from a game and look at it idependent of the big picture. There were many questionable calls both ways, but Duke certainly had more than their share. When Reddick, at the end of the first half, obviously travelled, pushed off, pushed off again, and scored. Calhoun walked calmly and determinedly to the locker room to get things turned around when he could've stayed on the court yelling at the refs ala K.

I'll invite further criticism by admitting that I only watched bits & pieces of the game so don't have a feel for the flow and flux of the action. My comments are about the final 2 minutes. This, it seems, is what most other posters are ripping Coach K for. I'm not buying his reactions where out of line or deserves as much 'hate' as you guys are placing on him.

Scott, You are correct. The dislike for the guy comes from years of the same old tune. "We promote sportsmanship and are total class," but when the cameras are off, look out, we are just like all the rest. It is an ongoing observation, not just a two minute stretch of one game. While I believe the man is an extreme two-faced hypocrite, I am simply stirring things up on an easy topic to do so. On a similar topic, time for me to shut up on the topic as well.

Well, if his atheltes acted the way he did everytime a call didn't go their way, they would be kicked off the team. By the way, the ball was cleanly stripped on that play... clear to see on replay. Also, it is pretty well accepted that the refs are not going to "decide" the game on a borderline foul... and as I mentioned, it wasn't even a foul. Coach K showed very little self-control and was a terrible example to the young men he coaches.

Basketball refs, NBA especially, tend to be the worse of all sports. For how much practice they get they are horrible. Red was fouled and it was a blowin call no doubt. However Uconn had a bigger sack yesterday.

It totally made my day to wake up this morning and read that Duke blew its lead and lost the game last night. I turned it off with about 5 minutes to go when they had an 8 point lead, and my logical thought process was "Well, I know for a fact Duke is going to get every single call during the last 5 minutes of the game, so why torture myself watching another nauseating over-hyped Duke advance to the finals. Duke is the most babied team in the history of basketball by the media and the officials. If they lost last nights game on a call that went against them, first I would say I was totally shocked, but if its true I'll only say the absolutely, positively DESERVED it .

Did you see a few days ago the ruling the NCAA handed down. In '99, Shane Battier received payment from a coach and in turn an agent. 20 previous teams had the same infraction previously and had all titles including NCAA tourney participation taken away. Duke was handed 'no penalty'. 20 of 21 penalized in history, one goes free. Guess who? "Duke gets no preferential treatment" is the cry by the backers however. Imagine if the cheaters had been UNLV, Fresno, or Mississippi State. It goes on and on.

You guys have to remember you are dealing with Scotth, Mr. Eastern Michigan University.

This is a guy that deals with selfish coaches who will do anything to win and when they don't, blame it on someone else. He is used to dealing with coaches who will take a kid who scores an 11 on the ACT and fudge with his records to make him eligible. Then, when the kid has exhausted his eligibility (which is usually 6 years) they will kick him out the door with no degree. He deals with coaches who will somehow find a way to make a 28 year old Kenyan, who cannot get into Butler, eligible for two years. Coaches who, year after year, have a foreign runner on their roster as a Senior and all of a sudden at the end of the year this Senior has another year of eligibility.

Now, would someone like this find any fault in what coach K demonstrated last night? I think not.

I don't understand the logic that most of you Duke haters use. They are babied by the officials and the media, so they are a team to hate? What does the reaction of people outside the team have to do with the team itself? Because Vitale sucks all of their dicks, and (you believe) they get favorable calls, you hate them and they deserve to lose? What do you want the players and coaches to do, ask the media to stop promoting them? Ask refs to call more fouls against them? There's nothing that the team could do differently that would take away your hate (except lose a lot for the next 10 years). Just because announcers on TV say they are perfect little college boys, and you recognize that is not the case, isn't a good reason to claim there's a "holier than thou attitude," and that they are a bunch of arrogant punks. I don't think anyone can give me an example of something a Duke player or coach has said that fits the "holier" description. I'd be following the same logic by saying: "Everyone is telling me that your mother is the hottest woman in the world. Since that's obviously not true (she looks the same as most other people), she gets way too much attention, so I hate that dumb stuck-up whore."

The player in question was not Battier. It was Corey Maggette. Know your facts.

Well, for one, Chris Duhon paints himself to be this perfect Christian boy, when I have heard from reliable, pro-Duke sources that he has no problem with girls giving him head while he plays Playstation with his buddies. He also doesn't seem to mind sleeping around like it's his job.

Yeah, a real choir boy! Well, we'll never have to worry about him again. There's no way he'll make it the league (like most Duke players), and he was humiliated by Ben Gordon in his last game.

Funny, everyone talks about how much of a leader he is, but he didn't win a championship when he was in charge of the team. In fact, they lost by CHOKING every year he was a full-time player. They won when he was a freshman and he didn't have to do shit.

I think tonight is another example that Duke and coach K are no better than any other program. People try to paint the picture that coach K and Duke are the classiest program in the NCAA when its simply not true. Coach K was pouting like a little baby all night after that loss.

Coach K is one of those coaches like Dean Smith who is great at getting to final fours, but not at winning it all. Coach K has won 3 out of 10 times in the final four, Smith 2 out of 11. Compare this to Adolph Rupp and Bob Knight who have less final fours, but have won it 4/6 and 3/5 times.
