Lutz committed to Texas a while ago, so we'll never hear about him again after this year.
He is now up to 45-50 mpw this summer/fall. He will take one day a week to cross train in the winter to drop that number a little as training in an upstate NY winter can be rough, then come back up a little in the spring. No need to do more than that right now. The goal isn't to use him up in high school, but set him up for a great future.
well he has incredible talent if he can run those kind of times with that little training. and most renowned coaches like to develop talent and not recruit talent. coaches have little to work with if someone is already running 75 mpw out of high school.
Where is Moussa going?
Why is everyone making such a big deal about this kid winning FLNE? I dont care if he doesnt run cross. The truth is, FLNE is about as competitive as a wednesday dual meet. He runs 4:10, which more than enough talent to beat 300 northeast runners in a race. Please stop acting so surprised.

if you were given a kid who came to you running 20 miles a week or so, not because of lazieness but because he just didnt know how to train and didnt have a coach who knew how to train him, would you automatically bump him up to 70 miles? no, you bring him along on the logical next steps which is bumpin up the mileage consistently over a couple months

Oregon's problem is that while they do a good job at working with guys (and women), they're no better at it than dozens of other programs and without being about to get a strangle hold on all the talent, they're no more apt to win than the others.
Furthermore, there are those other pesky programs that devote all their scholarship money to pure distance runners.
Vin could recruit more studs to Stanford because of the great academic status of the school, not to mention the great weather and the Bay area's charm when compared to Oregon. Now, he also has more access (due to lower academic standards for admission) to more high quality athletes in a wide range of events, which also will nibble at the scholarship pie.

There are lots of ways to train. Seems like the training this kid is doing is working for his body and isn't that the key...finding what works for you and your abilities. Seems hard to question what has been done when it is working like it is.
You are such a fool. Obviously you have no knowledge of what happened at FLNE this past weekend. All 10 runners ran faster than last year's winner, Brad Miles, who was pretty damn good last year. Everyone says the four NJ guys-Rosa, Cheserek, Elkaim, and Mazzacarro are the best in the NE, but I disagree. If you just look at what those guys did at NXN-NE this same weekend, you'd realized that only Rosa and Cheserek ran times that would qualify them for nationals, and they ran on a slightly faster course. Just because you quickly glance at some results and don't see the names of the only NE runners you've heard of doesn't mean it was a weak meet.
is he going to redshirt xc as a freshman? on that mileage, I would think that he would at Oregon. But if he were moving the mileage up to 70s this year and 80s in the summer, he would have a small shot at avoiding the redshirt. You don't use up a runner by raising his mileage. Runners can develop aerobically for ten years. So, with higher mileage now, maybe he would peak at 27. McDougal dropped a minute in college in the 5k despite high mileage prior to college, and Ritz dropped 30 seconds and another 20 afterwards. He wasn't used up by running 80s and 90s in hs.
What if you're still aerobically at 50mpw, and staying healthy and able to perform well? I'm a high mileage guy in general, but aerobic development can take several forms...

Are you on crack? Morgan Pearson almost won FL NE and he lost to Rosa by 24 seconds at NJ MOC the week before and took 5th.
Lananna is a great recruiter, a great leader and an average coach. With how much talent he's recruited to Oregon, they should have two teams in the 4x1mile break 16:00 this year. How many kids have done nothing under Lananna? With such notoriety and the Nike $$$, Oregon deserve the scrutiny they are placed under year after year.

This is laughable. He's a tremendous coach and his athletes do very well under his tutelage; Dartmouth, Stanford, and now Oregon. Looking at XC results, top 3 at NCAA's in the 1500 and a 3:30 and 3:35 (?) and Puskedra and Hasay and, on and on as you go back in time.
There is no way you can say that he is an average coach with a straight face. Go ahead and try to say that again, this time looking in the mirror, so that you can see your own reaction. When you say it again, out loud, hopefully you'll see a smirk rather than bitterness.
Oregon definitely deserves the recruits and accolades they reap. As Oregon goes, so goes the distance running prowess in America. We need Oregon to be competitive and successful so that the other programs have to raise the bar, i.e., OSU.
On a side note, recruiting HS kids is always a crap shoot. To mitigate this risk you recruit established talent and then take a few chances on underdeveloped athletes like Wheating and Noelle.
Does anyone other than me see the irony of getting a commitment from Noelle during the holiday season?
So...Lutz is going to do worse under a collegiate coach, John Hayes, than under his high school coach? Why is this? Unless Hayes, or Texas has a reputation for ruining athletes, which they don't, I don't see why Lutz would be a bust.
