Texas Mom - I agree to a point.

I think it absurd to criticize high school kids, but I also think it ill advised to make too much of out their high school careers and cause too much attention to be attracted to them.

I can say one thing. I can't argue with a focus on education, and Stanford is certainly a place with lots of challenge.

Just to show that this isn't exclusive to Dunn but seems to be a "Stanford problem" that has actually warranted peer-reviewed research studies:

Epidemiology. We detected sacral stress fractures in 21 distance runners (12 women and 9 men), who had 22 fractures. Fifteen runners were on the Stanford University cross-country and track teams, 5 were members of the local postcollege running club, and 1 was a longtime recreational runner. The average age was 21.4 years; 5 women and 2 men were college freshmen. Similar to a study of tibial stress fractures, [13] we found college freshmen runners to be at particular risk for sacral stress fractures. Freshmen accounted for 33% of the injuries, with women representing nearly three-quarters of these cases.

note that the study appeared in Feb. 2003, and the subjects were identified over a period of 6 years, so we can assume these injuries occurred in the late 1990s. note also that the study mentions a recommended vitamin D intake of only 400-800 IU/day. today an athlete prone to stress fractures would do well to take a much higher level, maybe 2000-5000 IU/day.

Yes, again, I pointed out at least 3 runner's hurt under Dunn AND a whopping 15 previously trained/researched under Vin. It's a "Stanford problem". But hey, guess she's going to the right place for info about it (although did Annie St. Geme ever get over her stress fracture issues??).

Lambie did not run for Dunn, Evans and Tegen, St. Gemme came in under Tegen and never was healthy under him, Centrowitz ran mostly for Tegen, not sure if she ever ran for Dunn.

Dunn took over in 2008. Lambie never ran for Dunn. St. Geme ran 1 year (actually ran her only race at Stanford) under Dunn. Centrowitz ran 1 year and was not injured during that year.

Nobody goes to world class academic universities like Berkeley, USC, UCLA, or Stanford for the coach. After all, coaches afre employees of the schools, come and go overnight, and are professional credit takers.

If her running career goes south, she'll still have a degree from Stanford.

Yeah she does well...she'd do even better if she didn't get injured once a year...i seriously hope her training at stanford will be different enough to prevent all the injuries she seems to be prone to...

Fox and his coaching staff do an excellent job of taking care of their athletes. She would continue to excel at the 'Cuse.

Even without the blue chip runners, I see Syracuse rising

to the podium on both the men's and women's side within the next 2 years.

You all clearly know very little about Chelsey, so stop speculating. As the OP on the this thread, I will fend for her by saying the following.

Her HS coach is AWESOME and used to run for Wake Forest, actually. So anyone knocking her coach for her injuries/his lack of knowledge is a clown.

Sorry, but I do believe that Chelsey utilizes a personal coach, not one from her HS. I would be VERY skeptical of seeing her progress much more if any in college as this guy has a long history of over-training his HS athletes with none of them closley resembling any sort of the success they had in HS. I knew/know of one of his top girl runners a few years ago that was doing 16-18 mile tempo runs on the weekends. She had an outstanding HS career, ran in FL nationals and had a nice scholarship at a D1 school. She never finished her fresh/soph seasons, quit the team, switched schools and has never had any success since. This is typical of this coach's HS athletes. A very good friend of mine and his wife at one time lived in the Dallas area and trained with an elite group of Olympic Trials qualifiers (2:11 marathon him/ 2:35 her), that was coached by Dr. Robert Vaughn. My friends said they cringed at seeing the workouts this coach put his HS kids thru. They were working more intensely than these OT qualifiers.

To all DFW HS parents, if you want your child to have a college running career, don't let them train with Chelsey's private coach.

Actually, Chelsey's coaches are Mike Krueger and Jason Yaffe.

And Chelsey runs around 30 miles per week, plus cross training, so I highly doubt she's being overtrained.

Please get your facts right before you bash one of this country's brightest prospects for the future.

I was told by boys that train with the striders group that she, too, has trained regularly with the striders group. If I was told incorrect info regarding her coaching and her training with the striders, then I apologize. However, my statements regarding the coach of the striders stands. He has and will continue to run his kids into the ground. Show me any athletes that he has coached in HS that have attained similar levels of success in college. I can name you many that have not, but I will not post their names here, as I would not want to name them without their permission. I could give you high schools and competitive years though, if needed.

It could be, too, that like many of her predecessors that have been coached by the striders that she has multiple coaches: her HS coaches and her "Personal" coach. Many of the strider's kids in the past have run their HS workouts then gone to the strider's workouts and run those, too. Again, I can give you many examples of this. I'm guessing this is what Chelsey has been doing. But, she runs with her HS team and that team has it's own coaches and the strider's coach stays in the shadows at those competitions (while he IS there watching and coaching on the side). I know it happens, I've seen it many times.

Also, a lot of the time, the HS coaches do not know this "side" coaching is going on. Sometimes they do find out about it, but because of the athlete's success and the HS coach's desire to have such a good runner competing for the team they reluctantly go along with the striders coaching, too. Finally, there are a very few local coaches who put their foot down and tell their athletes that they must choose between the striders and their HS team, in which case, they usually choose their HS team. There are several schools in the DFW airport area that have enforced this team rule.
