Maybe so, but I think it's absurd and immature that anyone would stay at home until age 26 (to keep being a "kid") or beyond (to basically take it easy at his parent's expense). If being an A-hole is the same thing as someone who won't tolerate a parasite, then I'll proudly accept the moniker.
There are extenuating circumstances at times, and I understand that, but you'd have to agree that a few of the above examples simply illustrate cowardly and lazy choices.
sounds like you have a chip on your shoulder. did you join ROTC or some shit at 18 too? I am fortunate I had a choice whether to drop 1300/mo living in the city (I did this the year before-age 25) or live with my parents in a nice house for free, run up to 90mpw and concentrate on my exams.
The truth of the matter is that leaving your family is a disease. One which America has in spades.
It is vastly more healthy, natural, strong and mature to have multi-generational families than the absurd one or two adult households that we now have in America.

Five days before I turned 18. My parents moved to another state and I didn't want to follow so I stayed in my home town. I literally lived in the canopy of my truck while I worked/saved up money for college until I was able to move into the dorms Freshman year.
I did stay at my parents house for a week when I was 26 due to a concussion I sustained (I was unconcious for a week which is when I was with them) but as soon as I came too I went back to my home.
I agree with the other posters who say if you can't make it on your own you have some problems.

I agree with this ^ as well.
However, there is a fundamental difference between "can't make it on your own" and "choose to live in a healthy, multi-generational family".

How long does it have to be for it to count as "living at home"? I mostly lived at my university from ages 18-22, but I spent the summer after my Freshman year working and living at my parent's house. Now I'm a grad student and pay my own rent on the other side of the country, but I still go back home for two or three weeks during the winter break. Does it count as living at home if I'm paying rent somewhere else?

I was illistrating choices is all. I'm no better than anyone, just pointing out if you want it bad enough you'll get what you want.
P.S. I could have rented as I was in construction and was making >$6k a month. Seriously. I chose to live in the truck to piss my parents off (I was upset they moved) and to save for college/my first house/getting married. I have actually spent over a year of my adult life (not all at once mind you) living in my truck in order to save money. Some people define it as "loser", I chose too in order to save money so that I could purchase more important (to me) items.
Went to law school after college (still came back to live with my parents over the summer) then got a job and worked but lived at home for a while still after law school... then got my own apartment.

How did you get into grad school again? ;-)
Late 30s, for about a week around Christmas.
I think many of the people who rush to move out are also the same type of people who have dysfunctional families.
My family gets along just fine and I'll often spend 2-3 months at home (I'm 23).
... who cares? If someone wants to stay at home, great. If not, great. Too many people concern themselves with other peoples lives.
Lived in foster care until I was 15, then ran away. Ended up getting a part time job at a restaurant. Lived with some other people I worked with in a big, old, run down house, but our rent was cheap. Ended up meeting an older guy who ate at the restaurant a lot. Got to be friends. Ended up dating. Got married. Got my GED and then on to college and now I'm a RN working in the ER at the local hospital. I wouldn't wish my younger years on anyone but it did make me who I am today. Can't say I wouldn't have wished for a nice family of my own to live with, though. Fifteen was way to young to be on my own. But I grew up when I was much younger anyway.
still live with them at 24. it can be bad; having them tell me what to wear and whatnot. but it's free rent and home cooked food. and enables me to save some money.

Glad someone beat me to it. I find it laughable that most people in America don't even realize this is how most of the world works. The health benefits are empirically VERY significant, as it reduces stress so extraordinarily much to have an actual reliable permanent family. Love is a beautiful thing. Selfishness (a cause of needing to prove your complete independence) kills.
I live at home with my mom, who doesn't want me to leave because she is single and lonely, i have 100% freedom to come and go as i please, i work 1 mile away from the house, im fresh out of college and im now saving up... why rush out?
