Plus was that speed comment just talking about Kiprop's 800? Because Komen has a faster 1500 and mile than Kiprop, both of which relate to the 3000 a lot more than the 800 does.

How much training did he miss those years? It seems he's missed more training for a longer amount of time, but not sure.

I'd say 3:37 is ambitious but possible for him.

This is also the same guy who dropped 4 seconds in the 800 within a 3 week span and outkicked a guy who has a 3:36 PR this season while running his 3:41.

I don't know about 3:35, but it's not outlandish considering his recent improvement curve.

Just a side note, what does everyone mean by 15 months of no training? Do you think that means nothing at all, or just no running?

We know he's been doing stuff on the elliptical and Salazaar's fancy equipment ever since he's switched coaches, so does that not count as training? Where is everyone getting 15 months from?

Plus, if he's lacking strength, Salazaar had him not do any weight training for 6 months, so 6 months of no strength work are purely the coaches fault and not due to being injured.

It's more like 15 months of no racing, as well as very little training (remember his achilles was injured, he could barely train).

When people say he's lacking strength, they don't mean his bicep curls, they mean general running strength. Aerobic & speed endurance, etc.

To me the situations are vastly different. Aside from the obvious fact that he didn't miss significant training time due to injury in 2008 or 2009, the thing is, every interview he gave at that time went something like "the training is going great, I'm running my fastest workouts ever...." yet the results on the track weren't what one would expect given those comments. He looked overweight at times and had a hitch in his stride. It was obvious to anyone that followed him that something was off, whether it was diet, training or injury.

Now the hitch is gone and he's leaner then ever. When you combine that his ridiculous talent, it's easy to see that he has tremendous potential over the next year.

Webb will probably run in the high 3:20s.

Then he will wake up.

That's the thing though. How much do you know about Webb's trainng under Razko? Probably not a whole lot. Whenever he said his training was going well, he NEVER gave numbers. Ever. I challenge you to find something involving how fast he was running in his professional years under Razcko. The last thing that was made public was his 2:48 1200m time trial in 2008.

Since he switched to Salazaar, it's like we are getting daily updates of his training. We know what he did TIMEWISE for a 6 mile tempo, 200 repeats, 1000m, 800m, 400m ladder, etc all within a MONTH of each other. Anyone who has been following Webb has heard nothing even close to that about his training. He was even asked in an interview before the USA mens 8K championships about how training was going, and he said well. Then the person asked what his workouts were, and Webb smiled and said "I'm not giving you my workouts."

That interview was on flotrack, look it up. Other than his 1200m time trial, try to find some training information, with actual times, from Webb under Razcko. He has revealed the set ups of some training days, i.e. half mile warm up, the drills he does, a 25 minute tempo etc. But he never said how fast he was running the tempos, or how fast he was doing the speedwork. That is a completely new thing he is doing by giving exact details of his training. Try to find some in the years past.

Not completely new. He actually did it a lot in high school. I remember in spring of '01 specifically hearing about workouts that went something like 8x400 in 58 with short rest, ending with a 53 or something like that. But you're right, in his later years, it was more general and vague.

However, the notion that we've been getting daily updates with Salazar is also off. Up until about 6-7 weeks ago, they kept everything locked up too, and people were all wondering what was going on. It was likely when thing were going very well, when they were sure he was going to stay healthy and pop some OK races this summer, that they started leaking stuff.

First, it was Galen saying he ran a workout with Alan.

Then, it was Alberto saying that Alan runs 1000 of a 1200 with Rupp.

Then we hear offhand about how Alan's doing great and did a few key workouts like 5 mile tempo and 4x200 afterward, and a bunch of 800s around 2:13.

The next thing we know, he's racing.

They're not really giving us that much information. They're feeding us just enough to keep us interested and optimistic, while still being cautious.
