Solinsky starting to remind me of Pre

The only difference is that PRE ran about 30 seconds slower. PRE raised the bar. Ritz, Hall, Rupp, Teg, Lag, and Solinsky and many others aspire to raise it higher. It seems improbable. That's what I thought after PRE.

Pre placed 4th in the Olympics when he was 21. While Solinsky wasn't doing shit. Pre won WAY more races than Solinsky did in college. We can wonder what Pre COULD have done all day long. But the truth is, he was better than Solinsky at his age.

It's filled with quotes and comments of arrogant know it alls that see chris or Rupp run a few times, see a few interviews and think you know them. Comparing Bekele and Pre is comparing apples era to oranges era.

They are not even relevant to each other. Different cultures, different eras, different conditions, different resources etc. etc. etc.

If Pre was Solinsky's age today, he'd be better than Solinsky.

Solinsky got Scared in Zurich. Pre never got scared in a race.

That is what made him special.

When people idolize Pre, they are not idolizing his times by today's standards and evolution, they are idolizing his Attitude, and his record in his developing career before it was cut short by his death.

No one in the USA has matched his domestic racing record.

Solinsky may, however, develop into as tough a runner as Pre.

I think that is what the OP was getting at.

Solinsky is getting there, and being pissed at himself for not seizing the moment in Zurich, is a step in the direction of Pre's attitude etc.

Pre would not be better than Solinsky in todays running and would have lost to even Derrick in college. Pre's Goal was even slower than Solinsky's PR is now.

The Pre hype on this board is ridiculous. I'm an old dude, and half the stuff I read on these boards is simply hollywood-style conjecture amped up about 20 times. He's not who you thought he was, that's for sure.

Bravery? Bob Kennedy took the lead against a far superior field in the 1996 Olympics 5k with a few laps to go and pushed for the win -- haven't seen any movies about him, have you? I guess not, he only got sixth. Oh well.

As for the original statement, it does have some validity. Solinsky is tough, setting American records, has a great range, is on the bigger/more masculine side, physically, for a distance runner, is outspoken in his love of training and pushing it... He is mixing it up in international competitions, and racing very hard and well over a variety of distances. If he can keep attacking like this, he may very be compared to Pre when it counts - at the major championships.

It's true that Pre's record was a bit more impressive than Solinsky's has been up to now, it's not like Solinsky hasn't achieved anything. He's been a stud at every level. His FLCCC win was as dominant as any during a tough era, and he had some breathtaking victories as a collegian as well. And obviously, running sub-13 an sub-26 is pretty effing impressive.

On the flip side, as cliche as it is, until he competes for an Olympic gold in epic fashion as Pre did, Pre will always have the edge. But Solinsky will get three major chances to shine in the next three years. Can't wait for Solinsky's signature moment, which I'm sure we have not yet seen.

Again, comparing apples to oranges, era-wise. Plus, Kennedy got the chance to finish his career, and race in the Olympics at the top of his game.

Any other names from the past that we're not allowed to mention because I want to get it right.

Actually the Olympic Trials 5000 record isn't held by Ritz Hall Rupp Teg Lagat or even Solinsky.

The bar is still there.

Of course Pre got scared before and during races. He would just never admit to it.

Pre had something to prove to himself every time he raced. He was driven to stand-up to authority as well.

Solinsky just seems to be a more well adjusted human being -- which is not always a plus as a runner.

There's Pre and then there's everyone else.
