Capitola/Soquel is a great place to live and train as a runner. Lots of tracks, lots of good year-round weather, no fluoride in the water, long runs at low tide on the wetsand, one of the best coaches around (Greg Brock), easy to get good food, a gym with a cold pool, low stress town, etc.
It is easy to thrive there. So frame it differently, Vessey is thriving there because she moved there. Anyone who says needs to do different is only projecting their own issues onto her.

What a sound statement from an ex-tranny.
All very good points Mr. Tranny, however the environment that brought her from national class to world class will not necessarily make her an Olympic finalist with a shot at a medal.
She has run 1:57 once on her best day, but what will it take for her to be able to repeat that level of performance consistently, and to develop the "killer instinct" that Seascape suggests she may lack?

Santa Cruz is an awesome place to train, but it ain't all its cracked up to be. There are plenty of issues with that town, its just so damn beautiful most folks just deal with it. I don't think the environment has as much to do with athletes performances as people think. The magic is in the runner, not where the runner is.

I live in a house very near by Seascape Resort in Aptos. It is an incredible place. I often run along the hard packed sand on the beach in the mornings. I can see Capitola and SCZ when I run. It is hard to explain how beautiful this place is.

The fact that fluoride is used to dump contaminants in and then feed them to people rather than paying the money to properly dispose of them, and that it has a mellowing affect on people can't be great for performance.
Lets see, slowly poison people and at the same time make them less likely to care about it.

Santa Cruz Track Club, Fleet Feet Training Programs, Wharf to Wharf Race, 1K's, 3K's, 5K's and 10K's for all ages and ability, triathalons, marathons, half marathons, redwood trails, beaches, huge support for high school track & field, sports medicine...we have it all here and it's beautiful!

Cons - No job, no fun. If you have a nice job selling large things like Mr. Seascape over there, no cons at all. Water is on the cold side, though. Where you live is a difference, too. West is very liberal (they brain wash kids to be socialist at UCSC) and gets more conservative as you go east. Living in a place that is too against one's perference may be a con.
Pros - Many have been named. Many more have not. As long as Mike Rotkin or whoever has taken over the fluoride fight wins, big pro. Last I heard, Watsonville was getting hit on that front. Hippies are good fighting for such issues.

Santa Cruz does tend to be very liberal (generally) and also has street people who really work at being street people.
The weather and scenery is tremendous. Yes, the Ocean is cold but people surf in it year round.
Great sports community and it does have access to Silicon Valley if you can tough out the commute.
I prefer Aptos. Less liberal than Santa Cruz but tolerant unlike wherever Ex-Tranny comes from. If you like freedom from other folks sticking their noses in your business and politics and religion, then Santa Cruz may be the place.
Unless, of course, your politics and religion don't line up with very mainline liberal views, in which case you'll be judged heavily on your politics and religion.....
Wait, what are we talking about?
Don't forget Brett Gotcher is also from the Santa Cruz/Aptos area. For a relatively small area it has it's its fair share of solid runners. It's an easy place to be outdoors and enjoy nature, thus people are outside more training.

0 humidity. Never cold. You are 5 feet above sea level. If you train here, you have a great climate, but you race elsewhere and it can put you at disadvantage. Its a really nice area. Also extremely full of itself.
