Since it is a team running, you should drive the morning of the race. The kids can sleep most of the way if they want.

Sorry, I should have explained the situaton better. I am a new coach at a small high school and more or less new to running. The cross country program was going to be done away with if someone didn't volunteer to coach and no one except for me was willing. This 150 mile trip would pertain to our conference and state meets which are both at the same place 150 miles away and we have a some what limited budget so I am just trying to determine how important going down the night before would be for best performance. Thanks for any input.
Now that you have explained the situation, if you do have the budget or the parents can share the cost, I think it would be a fun experience for the kids to stay over. Don't forget to get all the proper school/parent approvals if you do this, and bring along other adults.
Otherwise, I would assume you and other parents? would drive on that morning as the kids can sleep or relax. Now that we know it's not you who is racing, the drive is ok.
