the nike otc elite is basically the farm team. vin gets credit for the farm team at stanford but it is the idea of jeff johnson (stanford grad, nike's 1st employee, a farm team coach). vin gets job in eugene, gags (frank gagliano, then FT coach) and farm team move to eugene and otc ELITE is formed, close look finds johnson on the board of directors. johnson "finds" wheating, tells vin kid "might" be good. vin asks kid to come to U of O non scholarship, kid is now one of the best in the world. any doubt andy would sign with nike? unknown is whether andy will run for otc elite. my thought is he will.

It's not as if Wheating and Kiplagat are both applying for a job somewhere with their track credentials as a resume and no other factors to look at. Wheating has a mass of Americans following his every move. The amount of capital that the American market has to spend is far superior what the Kenyan market has. It's business, not racism. That said, Kiplagat's worth would undoubted be increased if he became an American citizen.

I guess I will have to return all of the Puma shoes, gear, and clothing I purchased after the insider on the other thread swore that Andrew was signing with Puma. Does anyone know where you can get the soon to be issued Nike Wheatings spikes? I heard each pair comes with a puka shell necklace.

Couple of questions:

--Since Wheating runs for Global Athletics, is he obligated to run in the meets Mark Wetmore promotes (Reebok Boston, Millrose, and adidas NYC GP)?

--Who pays for Wheating's coach: Nike, Global, or Wheating directly?

--Who pays for Wheating's health care, or is that budgeted into his contract?

--If Wheating decided he didn't want to run anymore before the end of his contract and quit, is he on the hook with Global for commissions they would've earned on the remaining part of his Nike deal?

--Safe to assume that Global does his taxes for money earned in races abroad?

--At the end of the day, what percentage of an actual endorsement deal actually ends up in the athlete's pocket, after paying agency fees, etc?

You are completely right. Wheating is marketable because he is a white american. This is also the reason that guys like Brad Miller and Kirk Hinrich get payed MUCH MUCH more than D-Wade and Lebron.

banking on kiplagat's age being 20 is unwise and while he is a phenomenal talent, of course, there's not exactly a track record or well known story or group of interested, well heeled customers that would support a big contract for him. don't worry about Kiplagat. He'll make plenty of money this year and next if he stays with it. Monaco alone must have been pretty lucrative.

Teg was the first and biggest home grown prodigy to come in years with a shot at BK's 3K and 5K records. He was 5th at the world junior cross champs, ncaa champ, world team member and olympia who missed a medal by a single place. He holds the american two mile record and and narrowly missed the AR in the 5000 last summer.

How about Solinsky?

NCAA Champ, World team member and finalist, nearly had the AR in the 5000, has the AR in the 10000 and is the first american (and white man) to break 27:00.

At this point Wheatin is technically further from any AR and international medal than either of them, and they are both white, so why would he get more?

Because the mile is a more marquis event than the 3k, 5k, or 10k.

PS, do you think it is legal for your employer to announce your salary to the public? (Board members and transparency required by law not included).

It has been in "The Business of Sports," type programs and reports many, many, many times over the years that salary figures are generally inaccurate, as they are leaked by agents etc., and almost never include the truth behind incentive and bonus clauses...

Being a fast (read very fast!) 1500/Mile runner is a hell of a lot sexier than a 5000/10000 track guy. Other than Eugene, who sticks around for the long track runs?

Jim Ryan-average Joe Six-Pack knows the name. If Wheating has the american mile record ( want to bet against it?), a lot more people will know who he is compared to a great american 10000 meter runner.
