Whos Wheating signing with?

"Coach" Rowland has exactly one very good runner (Symmonds). The rest havent gotten better and those that have only marginally so.

Jemma Simpson (spelling?) just finished 2nd in the 800 in Monaco. She PR'd doing so. Rowland is her coach.

Puma is a strong company with far less money stretched out amongst athletes. Companies like Puma and New Balance will actually pay the top dollar, but there are other things to consider.

I'd add that Puma has had Daniel (7:20/7:58/12:40) Komen and Wilson Kipketer and now has Bolt. They have been able to get the biggest elephants.

Not saying that the will get Wheating, but it won't be a lack of money thing.

I think Vin knows who butters his bread. If he coaches Wheating, you can bet on the swoosh.

Phil Knight absolutely loves Wheating and doesn't want to let him go. Nike will match any offer other companies make, so it doesn't even come down to the money. Nike will at least be even, if not ahead, in terms of money on the table. Given the support UO gets from Nike and the connections Wheating has undoubtedly already made in Nike, it is highly unlikely anything could pull him away from Nike in favor of another company. The only real question is who will coach him.

I agree, I just think that a lot don't understand that the other companies can and will actually come up with higher offers than Nike, and Nike won't have to be the highest salary offer to lock him in. There's a lot more to it than that.

And Portland has Jager, Teg, Solinsky, Ritz, Rupp, Webb, and others. They're no slouches at all and Wheating can do plenty of training runs with them despite divergence between areas of specialization. One pretty good training partner or half a dozen? It's a no-brainer yet somehow a bunch of you can't see it.

I've followed what you've said and I think you're missing a few key points.

1) Wheating is currently at a higher level than all those guys in his respective event. Why would you change what you are doing if you are having the most success?

2) Those guys don't race his events. Even Webb will likely be a 1500/5K guy rather than an 800/1500 guy. Why would an 800/1500 guy want to do over distance training runs with 3000/10000 guys who race 1500s occassionally for speedwork rather than workout with guys who actually workout for the 800 and 1500. Wheating runs about half the mileage of Jerry's group.

I'm not saying that it would be terrible to move up and workout with Webb, but it certainly doesn't seem necessary based on the fact that he is already having the most success and his current coach understands all his training and injuries and what he needs to be successful.

Salazar and Jerry are more used to guys who can handle a heavy volume load and came out of high school at Wheatings current mileage level if not 20-30% higher.

webb should move with wheating and symmonds, do like what the longer distance guys have had alot of success with recently and find a really talented group to work with. Hell they can all train in the same city if they really want i mean why the heck not? It would be like an all star post college track team.

Remember that Webb landed as one of the fastest 10K runners in U.S. history in his debut and only 10K (27:3X) and that was when 27:3X was considered top shelf for the U.S.

Also remember that Rupp ran 3:39.0 at a regional meet on a double. Rupp and Webb have some pretty good cross over with Webb benefitting Rupp more on the speed end and Rupp benefitting Webb more on the strength/endurance end. Together they should get very fast over 3000-5000.

I think Webb is really a 1500-5000 man who can run a helluva 800 and 10,000 wereas Rupp is a 3000-10000 guy who can run a nice 800 and will probably run 3:34 or better for 1500.

Guess we'll know more by next summer. Hoping Ritz will mix in with them a bit and take a couple more cracks at 5000 and 10000 as well. I don't suppose there is any chance Rupp and Ritz could get a 10K set up late in August or Early Sept. with some random up and coming 27:00-27:1X to be Kenyans.

One word: Webb. Nike will never forget the years and money it gave to him to stay with a coach in a location completely of his own choosing. They are not going to squander this chance with Wheating, they are going to have strict oversight and tight control by their inside men. Just like with Rupp. Eugene is for Ducks and for OTC, Nike's farm team, and Portland is for Nike International. Wheating's workouts are more apt to be closer to those of the Portland crew than those of the Eugene bunch. Whomever coaches him will tailor the training to what has been working for him, they're not going to force him into high mileage just because their other runners are doing that. It's a better overall environment for a top pro in Portland than it is in Eugene.

Wheating likes the beach and hates the rain and depressing North East USA and North West USA. Word is he'll work with Cook and live in Carlsbad.

Webb? Wheating has proven to be the opposite of Webb. Wheating has sought out pressure, taken it on and overcome it with grace, all with his current coach.

I don't know what you have against his current situation but something is blinding you here. It IS WORKING, arguably better than anyone elses situation other than Rupps. Wheatings consistency and progression are in line with Rupps. Both absolutely amazing and better than any other runners in the U.S. including anyone else in either Portland group. Rupp left Eugene for Portland to be near the very coach that got him everything he accomplished, but you are saying that Wheating should do the exact opposite and leave the coach that got him to everything he has done? Does that really make any sense?

Fleet, Centro, Acosta and Wheating are 4 of the top milers in the country and one of them is a college freshman. Add in a freshman who runs 1:46 for 800 and that is a damn impressive group. Centro was 5th at USAs in the 1500 and Acosta missed it by a hair only to have 3 strong 1500/mile races since then. You want him to leave a town of 5 or 6 3:36 or better 1500 guys and 3 or 4 1:46 or faster 800 guys to go to a town with 2 (one being Wheating)???

There is no doubt that Portland is 1st class and is working especially for long distance guys, but that by no means it works for everyone and especially 800/1500 guys. I mean, really, Wheatings results speak for themselves. He's beating some of the best milers in the world, just placed 4th in the fastest 1500 race in 4 years and you think he should go train with guys who can't break 3:35 (currently) for 1500 and won't even be doing 800/1500 workouts?

Agreed.

Wheating and Vin work well together. And Vin is the guy that developed an unknown to world class!

Some other deaf person maybe? Hell if I know.
