Well, confidence is everything, as well as sharpening correctly. I guess the kid proved that he CAN, in fact, run with the big boys, especially if he slipped and still shaved six secons off his PB. Expecting incredible things from Wheating in the future -- decent range, a solid head, and good form. Will be a 2012 threat. He is the best American miler now, and he proved it in this race by beating the best. Webb is incognito, and has never shown he can contend in championship races.

What's the conversion here - 3:48:00 roughly?

wow. tremendous race. I thought he could run 3:31 and that was optimistic, but as I said about Pre and Paris, he was in these fields because his coach knew that he was capable of much faster than he ran at NCAA's. I believe that this makes him the fastest ever collegian, counting summer after senior year, and this was a tremendous race. To move down so dramatically so quickly suggests that there is going to be more to come, and thank god that his coach did not repeat Gags's command to Symmonds, that is, I'll coach you only if you become an 800m runner and not an 8/15 guy. It's a shame that David Krummenacker did not become a real 8/15 guy, because he ran 3:31.93 and then dropped the event when it was his best event, arguably. Wheating just beat Lagat in his best fifteen of the year (dropping 2/3 seconds: he's not done yet, as he's probably just now getting in the speedwork, and maybe a 12:49 in the offing) and Lomong in a pr or close to it, and so there's every reason now to say that Wheating is the best American now in both the 800 and 1500. That was fast! Anyone who rises that quickly to the top in a good era is going to be a great one, in my opinion. Granted that he is not exceptionally young at 22, but he just started running seriously as a senior in hs and damn, he made a quick jump once turning professional.

On the pacing, 53.81/1:51/2:47 (DK the first lap, Collins Cheboi the 2nd and 3rd), that's obviously not ideal, but it depends on how far back the pack was, and the 2:47 was comparable to El G's pacers, so if that had been an even paced 2:47, you might have seen 3:27/8 tonight. Cheboi should be capable of running a good fifteen now as well.

Let me also be the first to congratulate Wejo for telling us this week that, remember the name, Silas Kiplagat was going to be incredible (that was the guy, right?), and also look at Amine Laalou, after running 1:43 earlier this year. There had not been a lot of 3:29's in the past four years.

Andrew Wheating has just ran the fourth-fastest 1,500 meters in American history.

The lanky Oregon alum clocked 3:30.90 in a fourth place finish Thursday at the Diamond League meet in Monaco.

That time trails only Bernard Lagat (3:29.30, 2005), Sydney Maree (3:29.77, 1985) and Alan Webb (3:30.54, 2007) on the all-time American list.

In a race that featured the five fastest times in the 1,500 in the world this season, Silas Kiplagat of Kenya won in 3:29.27, followed by Morocco's Amine Laalou in 3:29.53, Augustine Choge of Kenya in 3:30.22, Wheating and then Ryan Gregson in an Australian-record 3:31.06.

With the field single file behind a pair rabbits who successfully pushed the pace, Wheating remained patient near the end of that line until the bell lap. He worked his way up to eighth on the backstretch and then let loose a long kick around the final curve to pass everyone, save the top three who had broken from the pack, and had just enough left to hold off Gregson at the line.

Wheating, from Norwich, Vt., beat his previous PR of 3:37.52 set May 29 at the 2010 NCAA West Regional in Austin, Texas, by nearly seven seconds.

I have to admit, I didn't think I would see Lagat run under 3:34 again. I know his 5K time indicates he could, but I was skeptical. Nice run for Lagat. But this is outstanding for Wheating. he is nearly at Webb's for from 2007. Lets hope Wheating doesn't overtrain going into next year.

What's with the no name Kiplagat improving 10 seconds this year to run the fastest time anyone in the world has run in the last 4 years?

1) No European racing experience

2) 20 years old according to DOB

3) It's kind of mystifying that the world's been stuck at 3:30/3:31 with a talent like Kiprop. I think it might be much like the 5K as Canova chronicled where the pacing has just not been good enough combined with the non-championship year factor.

however, it does appear you only get about 1 good wabbited 1500/year, so i doubt he'll come close to that this year

also shows that we do have a lot of ~ 3'30 guys on the circuit currently, but wabbiting is just shit last few years & they end up with 3'32 instead !

Great performance by Wheating, but GREGSON has to get the performance of the day! Only 0.19 behind and just 20 years old. Wheating ran 3:45 when he was 20, so let's see where Gregson is at in 3 years!!!

I think its pretty obvious that he A.) didn't have the competition in college to produce such results and B.) he is peaking at the right time for the season...probably only has a couple races left in him.
