I think Krupicka would have likely won, or at least battled Roes, to the finish if he hadn't banged heads with Kilian for twenty miles.

This is the right answer. Anton ran hard against Kilian Jornet from mile 45 to mile 80 until Jornet finally folded (no one has ever done this to Jornet before, btw) while Roes just hung back and bided his time.

I think the two are probably very evenly-matched. Six minutes is nothing after 100 miles of racing and Krupicka's gutsier performance ended up costing him just a little in the end. Really, given how badly Jornet faded, it's really impressive that Anton ended up only six minutes back.

Anton is a mileage hog. The year that Jurek won WS and then Badwater 2 weeks later, his average week was under 100 miles.

I think no one who has posted has run Green Mt or Bear Peak in Boulder before. These are steep, craggy trails that an elite road/track guy would never dare touch. Anton wrote somewhere that he ran these mountains 191 times in the six months leading up to Western States. Anton's training on this terrain is astonishing.

Sell's 150-160mpw at 6min pace with workouts is equally impressive. I'm not going to say that either's training is "more difficult" than the other's. Only that they are almost too different to compare, much like these men's subsequent racing performances.

Good to see the Brojos trying to give the trail ultra scene a little credence, finally. If nothing else, trail shoes have become a big part of the running shop market over the last few years and that has to be acknowledged on a running site.

Anyone have a clue what these elite utlrarunners' PRs are at shorter distances like 5km, 10km, 0.5 marathon, and the marathon?

These numbers from his blog are pretty amazing. He's essentially a professional runner. Unless I'm mistaken, it appears that all he does is run and attend graduate school. More power to him for capitalizing on the prime running years of his life. He clearly has no desire to be a road racer but I'd love to see him take that volume and try a fall marathon. I suspect he could run low 2:20s with a little speed work.

Wow! I had never heard of this guy before. I googled him and saw his accomplishments. Pretty cool.

I read his blog periodically (http://antonkrupicka.blogspot.com/). I'm not an ultra guy or anything, but it's cool to see what a high level ultra guy's training is like. 180 is by far not the highest he hits. In summer 2008 he did 213, 197, 200, 205, 204 back to back. Pretty nutty.

The alternative is to be a total wreck and terrible example.

Looking out for yourself means also looking out for others, as it can't work any other way.

That's why he came in 2nd--- it's stupid not to taper---I mean, isn't tapering before the big run a fundamental of racing? Anyway, I don't believe any of the mileage he puts on his blog anyway? 184 miles? Utter bullshit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He said in a recent interview that he thinks he could go sub-2:30 if he trained specifically for a road marathon for 6 weeks. BTW, he ran 2:42 (I think) at altitude. I think his assessment is right on the mark. Given what he did in high school and college (nothing stellar), sub 2:30 seems to be about his top end. However, he isn't a low 2:20 guy by any means. Anyway, it's nice to hear him speak honestly about his abilities. Seems like a top-notch fellow.
