Robby Andrews ran a horrible final

The splits have been posted. No contest. This sort of contradicts your earlier post.

andrews ran basically the exact same tactical race in the semis and the final. why is one fabulous and the other shitty. its just harder to get around all the guys in the final plus wheating would have won no matter what.

Did you guys not watch the same race I watched? I saw Andrews tucked in behind Wheating for the first 500. With 300 to go Wheating started to go and Andrews followed but he left room for one body in between him and Wheating. Aaron Evans filled that space and Andrews panicked and looked for a route to pass on the inside but couldn't find anything. Then he sucked it up and went wide and bolted past everyone but Wheating was long gone.

It certainly looked like there was no way anyone was going to beat Wheating today but I do think it could have been closer had Andrews played his cards a bit better.

I disagree 100% with your analysis. Was Andrews as sharp as he was on Wednesday? Probably not (But possibly - Andrews closed in 26.60 on Wed and 26.61 today).

But it wouldn't have mattered if Andrews was just as sharp as he was on Wednesday. As I said in another post. On Wednesday, after seeing Andrews splits I thought to myself, "How can he get beat. He can close in 26.60 in a 145 mid race?" Well he gets beat by a guy like Wheating who can close in a 26.2 in a 1:45 mid race.

Please don't tell me that Andrews time on Wed. was faster than Wheating's was today. Yes it was but only marginally.

Wheating's close today was .40 faster and he had no one to chase. Wheating won by almost a second. Wheating closed in 26.20 and won by a ton. After watching the final, I know think the opposite. How could anyone have beaten Wheating? No one collegiately could. He wins that thing 10 times out of 10.

Now a top notch pro like Symmonds who closed in 25 high at Pre last year might be able to do it. See Symmonds splits form last year here. 2

He ran a 25.77 in a 1:45 high race to win Pre.

When Andrews tried to get in a better position before the end of the back stretch he was thwarted and had to break in and stay in the back too long...

Wheating ran in the pack, in lane two, and stayed in the position he wanted. And dominated down the straight.

As far as I'm concerned, Andrews came out on top.

He ran 3 seconds faster than Wheating in the semis, and was within 1 second today.

Based on semis times, Wheating should not even have been in the final. There was a 1:46 guy who didn't make the final, and Wheating got in barely breaking 1:49.

no top pro is accurate, he ran 143 and made the world championship final. he is a top end pro on the world scene, as wheating will be in a year or 2 in the 1500.

First of all, you know Wheating's heat was in pouring rain while Andrew's heat was in completely dry conditions, right? Secondly, please stay away from track and field if you don't understand that competition matters more than time. Real athletes would rather have no time qualifiers than not enough place qualifiers.

Also, for the record, there were several guys who ran 146 in the semi's who didn't make the final.

Who cares about these American bums. Asbel Kiprop (a year and a half younger than Wheating and already a Gold medalist) is running the 800m tomorrow in NYC. That's the race to watch.

Well what you call "panic" I choose to call much more deliberate. He left a space for Evans because he didn't want to go with Wheating. And it wasn't like Andrews had to go clear out in the 5th lane to get back to Wheating who himself was running on the outside. If it was a case where Andrews was closing fast on Wheating at the end, as he should have been if your theory was right, then I might agree with you. But I wouldn't exactly describe Andrew's final 200M as "bolting" around everyone. And I didn't see him seriously closing the gap on Wheatin in the final stretch.

Robby was bent over a trash can puking his guts out. I don't know if you could see on TV, but he almost missed his awards ceremony. I am guessing he was sick.

No way Wheating wins this 10 out of 10. The 800 at high levels like this is basically a throw of the dice, and while Wheating was better today he doesn't win every time. If the positions were reversed, or someone else made a move at the same time he did (like at Penn), the result might change. I'd say he wins probably 6.5 out of 10. Still, great results/season for both of them and I think this bodes well for the US in middle distance events in the future.
