If I were Wheating I'd mix it up a little and land in about 5th or 6th down that first backstretch and try to slip up to 3rd or 4th coming into bell lap and sit and relax around that 3rd corner and into the backstretch. With 250 to go I'd move up to first and go for it from there and hope the crowd takes him home. If he has a couple meters on Robby and gets his kick in full swing with 150 to go he'll be tough to catch.
I think Andrews will go to the back and if Wheating is there he will simply cover his moves and unless Wheating can simply come up with more (it is possible) in terms of running a 1:44 or better Robby has a great shot to win.
Another strategy is to sit dead in the back behind Robby and have him sweat on that. Get Robby thinking the whole race and wait until he makes his move and go to cover it. That is risky because A) you may not be able to cover it and B) someone like Primm could sneak away if Robby focusses too much on Wheating and not on the men in front. The main advantage of this to Wheating is he could run in lane 1 through most of the race, a luxury he is rarely afforded.
I would run .01s faster than him. Unless you are willing to take it out, your tactics need to be flexible. If some takes it out in 50, the race will play out different than if it goes out in 55. And then go with your strength. If Wheating thinks his best kick is from 150 go with that. If he think his 300m drive is best go with that. The rest is justing figuring out how to get in that position without wasting a lot of energy.

True, but problem is in an 800 is you often don't know what your pace is until 400 and the race is half over at that point. That's what makes the 800 interesting and intense, you only have a couple of chances to make decisions and they better be right.

Wheating needs to run his race. Relax, don't run wide and measure his effort to the finish.
If he does this and he is better he will win.
If Andrews is better then Andrews will win.
Wheating doesn't need to concern himself with the pace. Only positioning and distributing his energy to have a big close.
I don't have a rooting interest in either. I like them both. I give the edge to Andrews. The 800 is too random to really know what will happen, though.
You race a final just like you would race any other race. If Wheating even wants to stand a chance he shouldn't even be thinking about Andrews in the race. Wheating has run at the olympics; he should know how to race a final.
Actually if I remember right he kind of went early a Penn and then slowed up and then went again. I could remember wrong but I remember thinking why didn't he just keep it up instead of letting Robby catch back up.
If I were Wheating, I would run it like any other 800 final I've ever ran. Except this time, I would know that little sh*t is going to go as late as possible, and when I get the jump on him I am going to drop the hammer harder than he can and put it out of reach so by the time he reacts it will be too late.
My thoughts exactly. There are really only 2 options. Go for broke at 350 meters left and run him out a bit if he comes up on you -or- sit on him and pull an Andrews on Andrews. Should be a great race. Looking forward to seeing it online.
Relax the first 100, explode the next 400, slow down and make him pass me from 5-600 pushing him to lane 2, hang with him on the corner to make him run the longer radius, then all out the last 100m.
I say have Wheating go out in 50 or 51, because I think from a strength standpoint based on 1500m times, Wheating should be a little stronger, thus taking out a little of Andrews "kick", albeit not much. Andrews said it himself that he thought that would be fast. My thinking is that Wheating can possibly go low 1:44, but Andrews can't go much lower than what he did yesterday.
Side note, I remember once speaking with Coach McDonnell and his advice was too many coaches spend too much time on trying to fix 10% of the problem. In turn that means, I believe Wheating is stronger than Andrews, so have him go as hard as he can for as long as he can. If Andrews gets him, then the better man won, but I think overall Wheating is probably a faster 750m runner, but it's the last 50m that will determine the winner. I wouldn't discount 2008 Olympic trials moment either in this race. You see what a crowd could do for Wheating.
To beat Andrews, he's going to need to put the hammer down from the start - will need to go through the 400 no slower than .51 and try to hang on. Pure and simple, that's his only chance.
Wheating can handle 50 no doubt, but he can't actually pace it with Robby in the race or it's a hand out to him.
He should hope they go out in at least :51.X and make a strong move with around 220 to go. Robby likes to wait to the last 100-110 and Wheating can open up enough distance that the gap can't be closed down in the last 50. The only way Robby can get him in the last 50 is if he's near him with 100 to go.
It's going to be a nailbiter.
someone said they would like to see andrews mix it up with symmonds at usa's.... hahaha are u serious? symmonds would destroy this kid the last 150. andrews can kick really well but symmonds isn't stupid enough to let him pass him.. andrews would be laying on the ground after this race while symmonds takes a victory lap smiling at hayward field. no match

Perhaps, but I believe as a freshman Robby has already run faster than Symmonds lifetime best fore 1500 no? Both are 800 meter guys but if Robby already has the edge on strength he may have more fight than you think. Granted Symmonds is fantastic in Eugene but perhaps Andrews and Wheating will do more internationally.
Symmonds did run a 3:56 mile indoors, I don't think he has a 1500 PR on par with that yet. Basically he doesn't run many fast 1500s.
